Sports awards honour triumphs

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus recognised and celebrated the achievements of student athletes, coaches and teams during a sports awards ceremony on 13 October 2023 at the Great Hall.

The primary focus of the university sports awards ceremony was to honour outstanding athletes who excelled in their respective sporting codes throughout the year.

Motsepe Foundation donates R1,3 m to more than 250 NWU students to eradicate historical debt

The North-West University (NWU) Student Representative Council (SRC) has received a generous donation of R1,3 million from the Motsepe Foundation.

The gift is earmarked to address the pressing issue of historical student debt that so often prevents students from registering for the next academic year. The donation came at an opportune time for the more than 250 students who will benefit during registration at the NWU for 2023.

Prof Linda du Plessis shares insights at Global Education Summit

Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations at the North-West University (NWU), recently graced the stage at the Global Education Summit 2023 (GES-2023) at Chandigarh University in Gharuan, India.

The two-day summit, titled “India: Voice of Global South”, focused on promoting inclusiveness and international collaboration in higher education, with academics from 30 countries participating.

Celebrating the transformative power of trees during Arbor Week

In celebration of Arbor Week*, the North-West University's (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus took a bold step toward transforming its surroundings and championing sustainability.

On 10 October 2023, under the leadership of Prof Sonia Swanepoel, the deputy vice-chancellor for community engagement and Mahikeng Campus operations, the university community came together to create lush and environmentally friendly spaces through a tree-planting initiative.

Transforming MENTalities – one step at a time

Student Counselling and Development (SCD) on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus recently hosted a gentlemen’s gala themed “Transforming MENtalities”.

The purpose of the event was to invite men to talk about challenges they experience, and to reach out to one another and share their feelings.

The SCD looks after the mental health and general well-being of all registered students of the NWU.

Master’s student shines in FameLab competition

Carla Horn, a master's degree student in nursing sciences at the North-West University (NWU), stood out in the FameLab competition held on 21 September at the National Research Foundation Auditorium in Pretoria.

Securing her a spot among the top 10 participants, Carla’s presentation focused on how our government healthcare system can prepare itself to deliver effective patient care and save lives in the event of disasters, specifically based in obstetric wards or maternal wards.

Student Life hosts first annual arts award ceremony

Student Life on the Mahikeng Campus of the North West University (NWU) hosted the first Annual Arts Award ceremony at the Mocoseng Sundown’s Resort on 30 September 2023.

Charmaine Molosioa from the Arts Office of the NWU said the purpose of the award ceremony was to recognise the participation of students in structures such as the Student Campus Council (SCC), student residences, the campus radio station, NWUfm, and various student societies on campus.

Vanderbijlpark Campus bids farewell to Dr Sean McCallaghan

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently bid farewell to director for student life Dr Sean McCallaghan after being with the institution for 15 years as a student and staff member.

Dr McCallaghan, who is leaving for New Zealand, was commended for his exceptional leadership, mentorship and student support at an event attended by his wife, two children, staff and students.

He said it is not easy for him to say goodbye.
