The North-West University (NWU) Eagles cricket team on the Mahikeng Campus walked away as champions in the North West Cricket (NWC) First Club League 2023-2024 season, after a resounding victory over Klerksdorp Travellers IV in the final match on 23 March 2024.
Winning the toss, the NWU Eagles opted to bat first and set a target of 133 runs, being all out in 31,3 overs. In response, Klerksdorp Travellers IV struggled against the Eagles' bowling attack, ultimately being bowled out for 75 runs in 23,1 overs, resulting in a decisive 58-run victory for the Eagles.
The team's success was attributed to the leadership and support of captain Sello Maya, along with the contributions of John Mohaswa and Jongokuhle Nzima.
Throughout the season, the Eagles showcased remarkable form, winning 10 out of 12 games, with one loss and one game abandoned. Competing against other North West province teams such as Klerksdorp Travellers IV, Ikageng, Klerksdorp Travellers, Vryburg Superkings, Impala and Tlokwe CC, they demonstrated their dominance in the league.
The journey to victory for the Eagles started on 21 October 2023, under the guidance of head coach Morena Tsotetsi, who was tasked with leading the team to the University Sports South Africa tournament.
"This victory is a testament to our team's unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence. We faced each challenge head-on, driven by a collective desire to succeed. I'm immensely proud of our players for their hard work and resilience throughout the season,” says coach Tsotetsi.
“As we look ahead, we remain focused on our goals, knowing that every triumph and setback has prepared us for the next chapter. Together, we'll continue to strive for greatness and uphold the spirit of unity and sportsmanship that defines our team," he adds.
With this victory, the Eagles will advance to the promotional league, and if all goes well, they will compete in the premier league in the upcoming season.
