North West High Court judges lead NWU-Juta Mock Trials

A full bench of North West High Court judges presided over the annual North-West University (NWU)-Juta Mock Trial finals held at the High Court in Mahikeng on 7 August 2023.

Leading the panel was Deputy Judge President Tebogo Djaje, accompanied by esteemed justices Francies Reid, André Petersen and Myron Dewrance.

North West Judge President Ronald Hendricks viewed the proceedings from the gallery.

Bodybuilding team rakes in awards at provincials

The bodybuilding team from the North-West University (NWU)'s Vanderbijlpark Campus had a successful run at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) provincials, walking away with eight trophies and three medals.

The team's impressive performance included five first-place finishes, one second place, and two third places.

The team's success at the provincials has also led to 11 bodybuilders qualifying to represent the NWU at the national USSA competition in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga from 1 to 3 September.

MBA Winter Study School: A week of learning and growth

Hosted from 24 to 28 July at The Roots Lifestyle Centre in Potchefstroom, the MBA Winter Study School of the North-West University (NWU) Business School proved to be an enriching and transformative experience for all involved. The week kicked off with an array of insightful guest speakers, leaving the attendees both inspired and enlightened.

Vanderbijlpark Campus’s landscaping wins an award

Rothe Plantscapers’ landscaping on the North-West University’s (NWU's) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently scored the garden maintenance company a silver award at the South African Landscape Institute’s (SALI’s) Awards of Excellence ceremony.

As a principal member of the institute, Rothe Plantscapers submitted the Vanderbijlpark Campus as an entry, and their outstanding landscaping work earned them the award for their exemplary performance within the 75% to 84% range.

NWU lecturer shortlisted for the position of SA public protector

Prof Boitumelo Mmusinyane from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Law has been shortlisted as one of eight candidates for the position of public protector of South Africa.

The candidates were shortlisted on 26 July by the Parliamentary Ad Hoc Committee who is tasked with appointing a replacement for Busisiwe Mkhwebane.

Navigating learning through the lens of communication

Students’ perceptions of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) used for emergency remote learning in higher education during the Covid-19 pandemic was the theme of the research Thato Zethi conducted at the North-West University (NWU).

Thato, a PhD candidate and junior lecturer in the School of Communication, conducted this study as part of her master’s degree.

Prof Falola's generous book donation enriches NWU library

Prof Toyin Omoyeni Falola, a renowned Nigerian historian and professor of African studies and current holder of the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities at the University of Texas at Austin, has generously donated 27 books to the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus library on 1 August 2023.

Twelve of these books have been either personally authored, co-authored or edited by Prof Falola himself. These works cover various subjects, including history, politics, philosophy and decolonisation.

Jarred gears up for World Student Games

Badminton boffin Jarred Elliott, a 23-year-old second-year student in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the North-West University (NWU), will represent the NWU and South Africa at the upcoming International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games in China.

Recognising the immense responsibility that comes with this honour, Jarred, alongside the other members of the South African contingent, is diligently preparing for the upcoming games.

Taking a stand against gender-based violence with Varsity Football

In collaboration with Student and Counselling Development, the university's football team aims to rally students and sports enthusiasts to stand united against the prevailing scourge of GBV that plagues our communities.

NWU Vice-Chancellor’s Science Day: Empowering young minds
