Over the past two weeks, from 27 January to 7 February, registered postgraduate students from the North-West University (NWU), alongside other participants from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC), engaged themselves in the fields of data science and computational thinking. In a world of data-driven decision-making, they acquired vital skills that will influence their futures.
On 8 February 2025, the North-West University (NWU) rolled out the purple carpet for its newest ambassadors across all three campuses, welcoming about 13 000 first years to the NWU family. The official welcome unfolded on the Vanderbijlpark Campus, with a live broadcast to the Potchefstroom and Mahikeng campuses.
A familiar voice, Mogomotsi "Peculiar" Ntehalang, a final-year communication student on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, walked off with the coveted Radio Presenter of the Year Award at the 2024 North West Media Awards in December.
Peculiar has been hosting the NWUFM Maftown Drive show on weekdays from 15:00 to 18:00 since from 2022. The programme features segments such as Ispan Iplan, which provides job insights, and Flash of Thought, which focuses on controversial discussions and factual information for listeners.
South African indigenous knowledge is precious, and few people are better qualified than North-West University (NWU) alumnus, Dr Thulisile Bhuda, to contribute to preserving it.
This explains why Dr Bhuda has been reappointed to the Indigenous Knowledge / Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) National Authentication Panel.
She will serve on the panel until 2027, following her initial appointment in 2021.

Global financial conditions have a significant effect on the stability of the South African economy, according to a recent study by two researchers from the North-West University (NWU).
In their study on the influence of global financial cycles on South Africa’s financial cycle, Prof Precious Mncayi Makhanya and Khwazi Magubane from the School of Economic Sciences on the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark campus, examined the impact of global capital flows, asset prices and investor risk sentiment.
Monday, 27 January 2025 was not all business as usual at the North-West University (NWU) Potchefstroom Campus. Dignitaries from the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Higher Education, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) were hosted for a day-long oversight visit to the notable locations on the campus.
North-West University (NWU) nursing student Bonolo Precious Mogari and her teammates reached the semi-finals and secured a bronze medal for South Africa in the Kho Kho World Cup 2025 in India.
"It was an incredible experience to represent South Africa on such a global stage," says Bonolo. "I have been playing Kho Kho since I was 12 years old, and being part of the inaugural World Cup is a moment I will always cherish."
The North-West University (NWU) is pleased with progress regarding the registration of first-year students for the 2025 academic year.
We received more than 390 000 applications to enrol at the NWU for this academic year. The NWU is implementing a new residence management system that will significantly improve efficiency within the university’s residences. The StarRez system is specifically designed for student housing and has numerous applications for residence management, placements, student interactions and reporting, among others.
The North-West University’s (NWU’s) subject group Social Work celebrated its annual Solemn Declaration Ceremony, a significant event for social work students across the university.
The ceremony was organised by senior lecturer Tasleem Sayed from the Potchefstroom Campus, Dr Lucé Pretorius, deputy subject group leader and senior lecturer from the Vanderbijlpark Campus, and Ellen Tlhojane from the Mahikeng Campus.
