Transformative workshop examines energy resilience and sustainability within BRICS+ nations

Prof Kedibone Phago, director of the School of Government Studies at the North-West University (NWU), recently had the opportunity to attend a landmark workshop with the BRICS Research Community of Practice.

Hosted by the Pandit Deendayal Energy University in Gujarat, India, the event drew scholars from BRICS and BRICS+ nations, including South Africa, India, Russia, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia.

The workshop, themed “Energy resilience and sustainability in BRICS+ nations – a policy analysis perspective”, provided a rich tapestry of discussions and presentations.

Venture leads to turnkey solutions to everyday problems

The Faculty of Engineering at the North-West University (NWU) prides itself on its cutting-edge innovations and research. One of the faculty’s internal corporate ventures called STRIDE is unique in that it is able to timeously produce business-ready solutions for everyday challenges.

STRIDE, which was founded in 2022, recently rebranded itself and was launched at the Faculty of Engineering on the Potchefstroom Campus on 11 June.

Subject group History hosts insightful pre-conference presentations

The subject group History at the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently hosted a series of insightful postgraduate history presentations, serving as a rehearsal for the upcoming South African Hydrological Society (SAHS) Conference set to take place from 26 to 28 June at the University of Johannesburg.

First Sesotho Language Colloquium to further discourse on the importance of indigenous languages

The School of Languages and the Language Directorate at the North-West University (NWU) will host a Sesotho Colloquium from 27 to 28 June to celebrate and promote the Sesotho language.

This colloquium is significant as it marks the first time a conference of this scale will be conducted entirely in an African indigenous language and is set to make a significant contribution to the preservation, appreciation, and academic advancement of the Sesotho language.

SADiLaR director elected as Zimbabwean fellow

The executive director of the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) at the North-West University (NWU), Prof Langa Khumalo, has been elected as fellow of the Zimbabwe Academy of Sciences (ZAS).

Founded in 2003, the ZAS recognises and promotes outstanding science through election to membership, and this process brings recognition, honour, distinction and excellence to scientific programmes, projects, research and innovation.

Language Directorate hosts launch of Tuelo Gabonewe's Dirurubele

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Language Directorate recently hosted the launch of Tuelo Gabonewe's book, Dirurubele, at its Mahikeng Campus.

Tuelo was born in Sekhing in 1985 and is a novelist, children's author, screenwriter, filmmaker and TV producer based in Pretoria. Dirurubele is the sequel to his erotic novel Dinotshi, published by Xarra Books in 2020.

Ensuring a future for migratory fish species

The Water Research Group (WRG) from the School of Biological Sciences and the Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management at the North-West University (NWU) collaborated with Nature-I-Am to celebrate World Fish Migration Day. Children between the ages of 4 and 13 from twenty different schools across Potchefstroom, Stilfontein and Fochville participated in the celebration, which took place at the appealing Lekwena Wildlife Estate on Saturday, 25 May.

Stable GNU together with policy certainty will maximise business confidence

After having held highly successful free, fair and peaceful watershed elections on 29 May, South Africa has now embarked on the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) to navigate an election outcome in which no single party achieved a majority. To manage the new political dynamics and provide stability, a GNU is now being formed.

Prof Raymond Parsons, economist from the North-West University (NWU) Business School, says high-growth economies typically build their prosperity on sturdy and stable political foundations.
