Prof Bismark delivers keynote address for provincial legislature

GNU Cabinet must outline economic agenda to ensure greater policy certainty

The much-anticipated announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa of the new Government of National Unity (GNU) Cabinet is, on the whole, good for business and investor confidence.

Prof Raymond Parsons, economist from the NWU Business School, says the markets are likely to respond positively as they digest the new mix of Cabinet appointments.

bpSA helps 100 students to overcome the final hurdle

bp Southern Africa has responded to the plight of North-West University (NWU) students as part of its centenary commemorative initiatives. The company has donated R2,5m to help 100 of the university’s students clear their outstanding fees, enabling them to enter the working world with confidence.

Answering a parliamentary question earlier this year, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande said 56 627 students at the NWU have outstanding fees.

The NWU Business School is taking a stand against corruption

The facts are irrefutable: South Africa is a country rife with corruption that is undermining our democratically elected institutions and hampering our economic growth. Corruption is not a disease in this country, it is a pandemic. But, for every disease there is a possible cure and pandemics can be curtailed. The North-West University (NWU) Business School, through its Unit for Corruption and Integrity Studies (UCIS), is endeavouring to inject some sense where sensibility has been lost.

SADiLaR celebrates PhD aimed at improving Sesotho learners' reading skills

A former high school teacher's quest to improve the poor reading ability of learners in low-resource languages has resulted in a groundbreaking PhD. Centered on the development of a means to measure text readability while developing digital language resources for Sesotho, this research is the first of its kind and will also serve as a model for other African languages.

Convocation hosts debate on the battle for the youth vote

On 24 May 2024 the Executive Committee (ExCo) of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Convocation hosted a public discussion themed “Battle for the youth vote – 30 years into democracy”.

Held at the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus and moderated by ExCo of Convocation member Bongani Mahlangu, attendees had the opportunity to engage with political party representatives on the coming election. The parties in attendance included the African National Congress, Economic Freedom Fighters, Patriotic Alliance, Rise Mzansi, Forum 4 Service Delivery and uMkhonto weSizwe Party.

Paving the way for ethical leadership from Potchefstroom to Geneva

The North-West University's (NWU’s) Unit for Distance Learning (UDL) emerged as a pivotal voice at the recent International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) Leadership Summit that took place from 5 to 7 June 2024.

This summit was a collaborative effort between the ICDE, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, and Globethics, an international NGO focused on ethical leadership.

Delving into socio-economic issues to strengthen global engagement

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) long-standing commitment to building a diverse plethora of global relationships resulted in a noteworthy event encouraging the exchange of ideas on Friday, 21 June.

A delegation of about 30 individuals from the University of Pennsylvania’s Africa Center in Philadelphia in the United States (US) and the Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad (GPA), met with various NWU representatives at the Sports Village in Potchefstroom.
