It was a convergence of media practitioners, communication scholars, staff and students on the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) as the legengary broadcaster and famous isiXhosa language news anchor, Dr Noxolo Grootboom, delivered a public lecture on indigenous language broadcasting.

This public lecture was hosted in hybrid format by the NWU’s Indigenous Language Media in Africa (ILMA) research entity.

As part of their community outreach programme, the All Sports Chapter (ASC) and Sports department on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus are reaching out to local schools lacking sports equipment.

The aim of this programme is to give back to the community and to add value to sports development in the Ngaka Modiri Molema region.

According to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA), approximate 70% of the South African population rely directly on agriculture as a means of living.

On 18 February 2022 during the State of the Province address the North West Province Premier Bushy Maape announced that the five departments placed under sections 100(1)(b) and 100(1)(a) of the Constitution are stabilising.

Academics in the subject group Business Statistics and Operations Research of the North-West University (NWU) recently donated school shoes to less privileged learners at PHERA Primary School in Tsetse, a village on the outskirts of Mahikeng.

You can tell him nothing about challenges. After all, he is swimmer who has represented his province, North West, at national level. Hours of sweating in the gym? No problem. In fact, it is all that sweating in the water and with weights that built those shoulders on which his next challenge, and his next responsibility, rests.

The North-West University (NWU) has included goalball – a sport specifically played by visually impaired people – in its 2022 sporting codes.

On 25 February the South African National goalball champions team played a demonstration game on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus to introduce the sport to students.

According to Jim Molautsi, director of Student Life, one of the department’s goals is to create a culture that celebrates diversity and enhances social cohesion. 

On 24 February 2022 the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Languages, in collaboration with the North West Provincial Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation (ACSR), hosted an event on its Mahikeng Campus to celebrate of International Mother Language Day.

Keynote speaker at the event, ACSR MEC Galebekwe Tlhapi, said mother tongue education in South Africa remains a major issue that the nation should discuss. 

Two nursing students from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, Sakhile Ngcobo and Tshiamo Mokgoetsi, have been selected to take part in the Health and Social Care skill category of the WorldSkills South Africa national competition on 28 March 2022.

They will be competing for the chance to represent South Africa at the 46th International WorldSkills Competition which will be held from 12-17 October 2022 in Shanghai, China.
