Teachers' Day 2022: Transforming education

By Ontiretse Motingwa

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually on 5 October in recognition of and to show appreciation for the critical role teachers play in contributing to education and development across the globe.

This year’s theme is “The transformation of education begins with teachers”.

“This year’s theme reminds me of the Bible verse 1 Timothy 5:8 – in short – charity begins at home,” says Ellen Nkwe, North-West University (NWU) Setswana lecturer.

She adds that this day is a reminder to teachers to come together to identify and find solutions to the problems teachers across the world face. “Transforming education begins with teachers, and therefore we need the necessary motivation, resources, and a conducive environment to make a lasting and significant contribution,” says Ellen.

“For me, this theme means that change starts with teachers. We have to be self-motivated and love our work so that we can empower and nurture our learners to make well-informed life decisions and become the leaders of tomorrow,” says Lebogang Mosidi, a final-year education student.
