NWU dominates North West Sports Awards with six major honours

The North-West University (NWU) reaffirmed its status as one of the leading sports universities in South Africa after securing six of the top honours at the 10th North West Sports Awards event, with its football, athletics and road running programmes all recognised during the ceremony held at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday.

NWU captain Aphelele Sibisi crowned North West Sport Star of the Year

The historic rise of the North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute into professional football has earned another milestone after captain Aphelele Sibisi was named the 2026 North West Sport Star of the Year at the 10th North West Sports Awards held at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday, 1 August 2026.

The award, determined through a public vote, was in recognition of his performances and leadership during the first half of the season.

Recognising the wisdom of generations: DSTI and universities advance indigenous knowledge through RPL

For generations, indigenous knowledge holders have preserved African healing systems, cultural practices and ways of understanding the world without formal recognition. 

A partnership between the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and three universities has now completed a pilot project aimed at changing that by formally recognising indigenous knowledge practitioners through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) system.

Academic calls for stronger support systems to protect SA’s vulnerable children

South Africa’s children face increasing risks of abuse and neglect, while the professionals responsible for protecting them often work within systems that limit their ability to respond effectively.

This was the message delivered by North-West University (NWU) academic, Prof. Elmien Crofford from the Faculty of Health Sciences, during her inaugural lecture on 1 July 2026.

Academic receives global environmental science honour

A North-West University (NWU) researcher has joined a group of scientists recognised for shaping environmental science across the world.

Prof. Victor Wepener was named a recipient of the 2026 Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Fellow Award during a recent event in the Netherlands. The award recognises sustained contributions to environmental science, research leadership and societal impact.
