The North-West University (NWU) continues to strengthen its leadership footprint across southern Africa. Prof. Daniel Metsileng, deputy director of the School of Economic Sciences, was elected as the new president of the Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA).
Prof. Metsileng was elected during the SAUSSA Annual General Meeting held on 13 June 2026 at the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN). He will serve a three-year term as president while continuing to lead the NWU Staff Sports Club (NWUSSC) as its chairperson.
His election marks a proud achievement for both the university and the region, underscoring the commitment of the NWU to leadership, staff wellness and regional collaboration through sport.
Alongside his regional sports leadership responsibilities, Prof. Metsileng is also leading a new academic chapter at the NWU following his appointment as the director of the newly established School of Applied Business Analytics and Decision-Making, effective 1 July 2026.
The new school reflects the commitment of the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences to preparing graduates with cutting-edge analytical, digital and decision-making skills that respond to the evolving needs of industry and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
A journey built on service and passion
Prof. Metsileng's rise to the presidency has been shaped by years of dedication to staff sport at the NWU.
Having been an active member of the NWU Staff Sports Club for several years, he transitioned into leadership when he was elected deputy chairperson for the 2024–2025 executive term. In April 2026, he was elected chairperson of the club, continuing his commitment to creating opportunities for staff participation in sport and recreation.
As coach of the NWU Staff Sports Club soccer team, Prof. Metsileng also enjoyed remarkable success, guiding the team to two gold and two silver medals at SAUSSA tournaments.
Reflecting on his election, he expressed gratitude for the confidence shown in him by member institutions across the region.
"I am deeply honoured and humbled by the trust that member institutions have placed in me to lead SAUSSA. This election is not just a personal milestone, but a reflection of the collective commitment of universities across Southern Africa to use sport as a catalyst for unity, wellness and institutional collaboration."
Using sport to unite southern Africa
SAUSSA promotes sport, culture and recreation as vehicles for strengthening relationships among universities across southern Africa.
As president, Prof. Metsileng intends to build on these founding principles by expanding collaboration among member institutions and increasing participation in staff sporting and cultural programmes.
"Sport has the unique ability to bring people together, regardless of nationality, language or culture. It creates friendships, breaks barriers and builds lasting partnerships. My vision is to strengthen SAUSSA as a platform that promotes social cohesion, healthy lifestyles and meaningful collaboration among universities throughout our region."
He believes universities have an important responsibility beyond teaching and research.
"Higher-education institutions should not only produce graduates; they should also build healthy communities. Staff wellness is an integral part of institutional excellence, and sport plays a vital role in fostering teamwork, resilience, discipline and mutual respect."
Proudly representing the NWU
Prof. Metsileng says he is proud to represent the NWU at regional level and hopes to use his new position to strengthen partnerships that will benefit both SAUSSA and the university.
"The NWU has consistently demonstrated its commitment to staff development, wellness and excellence. I am proud to represent our institution on this regional platform, and I look forward to creating opportunities for greater collaboration, knowledge sharing and sporting excellence among our member universities."
A proud milestone for the NWU
Prof. Metsileng's election reinforces the growing influence of the NWU beyond academia and highlights the commitment of the university to holistic staff development.
His appointment comes at a time when staff wellness, mental health and work-life balance continue to receive greater attention across higher education.
Through his dual leadership roles as chairperson of the NWU Staff Sports Club and the president of SAUSSA, Prof. Metsileng is well positioned to champion initiatives that encourage active lifestyles, institutional collaboration and regional integration.
As he embarks on this new chapter, the NWU community congratulates Prof. Metsileng on this outstanding achievement and wishes him every success as he leads SAUSSA over the next three years.
"This is only the beginning," Prof. Metsileng concludes. "Together with our member institutions, we will continue using sport to inspire, unite and strengthen higher education across southern Africa. When universities work together beyond the classroom, everyone wins."
