The South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) and the UNESCO Chair on Multimodal Learning and Open Educational Resources (OER) at the North-West University (NWU) are having the first intake of their Digital Humanities OER Champions Initiative.

The research niche area Indigenous Language Media in Africa (ILMA) at the North-West University (NWU) is embarking on a three-year research project to assist South Africa’s struggling indigenous language media.

The past few years have seen massive closures and restructuring of media houses in South Africa, partly due to the introduction of digital platforms and social media, leading to a steady decline in advertising revenues and circulation.

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the exclusion of even more South African residents from economic activity has further weakened the country’s already fragile peace.

This is one of the conclusions drawn by North-West University (NWU) academic Dr Gideon van Riet, who recently published an article based on three years of research in the JB Marks Municipality. The research focused on investigating the link between the Covid-19 pandemic and South Africa’s fragile peace through the lens of crime.

North-West University (NWU) student and Setswana writer Lesego Motlhankana has taken the world by storm.

On 24 February 2022 the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Languages, in collaboration with the North West Provincial Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation (ACSR), hosted an event on its Mahikeng Campus to celebrate of International Mother Language Day.

Keynote speaker at the event, ACSR MEC Galebekwe Tlhapi, said mother tongue education in South Africa remains a major issue that the nation should discuss. 

The South African penal system has failed and as a result crime remains out of control. This is the harsh and uncomfortable reality that is plaguing society, and the country’s haunting crime statistics attest to that.

One reason for this is the lack of rehabilitation opportunities available to offenders. The allure of falling back in old ways can be too appealing, but there is also a fundamental misunderstanding of the systematised obstacles criminal offenders face when reintroduced into society.

North-West University (NWU) alumnus, Oratile Mokgwetsi, has made the university proud by obtaining five awards for being part of a team working on Nando’s digital marketing campaigns.

Oratile, who completed her BA degree in communication in 2013, scored this feat while working as a digital media strategist at VMLY&R South Africa, an advertising agency that runs digital campaigns for Nando’s.

She received an Apex award for assisting in Nando’s e-commerce platforms, giving her input on the consumer journey and touchpoints.,

The academics of the North-West University (NWU) have a well-deserved reputation for expertise, hard work and dedication. This is again evident in two lecturers being selected for the prestigious South African Teaching Advancement at University (TAU) Fellowship Programme.
