The North-West University's (NWU’s) School of Nursing recently hosted the quarterly meeting of the Forum for University Nursing Deans of South Africa (FUNDISA).

FUNDISA, a registered non-profit organisation, acts as the national representative for nursing and midwifery undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in higher education across South Africa.

The meeting saw the heads of nursing schools from 21 universities come together to deliberate on various aspects of nursing education.

Addressing challenges in nursing education

Maricélle Botes, a final-year PhD student at the North-West University`s (NWU’s) Research Unit for Law, Justice and Sustainability, has been honoured with the National Research Foundation’s (NRF’s) Research Excellence Award for Next Generation Researchers in the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law category.

The award, presented at a glittering event, recognised her outstanding academic performance and demonstrated potential for contributing significantly to the national system of innovation.

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Social Sciences played host to the successful Planetary Utilisation of Sustainability Strategies (PLUS) Southern African Regional Conference from 11 to 13 September at its Mahikeng Campus.

The conference, themed "Land, Landscape, Local Knowledge, and the Pursuit of Sustainable Ontologies," brought together experts, postgraduate students, and thought leaders to discuss pressing issues related to sustainability.

The continent is ravaged by a host of factors inhibiting food security and is trapped in what a recent report by the World Bank calls “the perfect storm”. Its consequences are disastrous. The Covid-19 pandemic was followed by the war in the Ukraine, which has led to severe food and fertiliser shortages. Now, Africa is in the midst of a tempest of increased debt and inflation, as well as the effects of climate change. The World Bank states that at least one in five Africans goes to bed hungry, and that about 140 million people in Africa are in a food insecurity stranglehold.

The North-West University's (NWU's) Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), in collaboration with the Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA), will be hosting the HELTASA (Un)Conference from 24 to 26 October 2023 on the Vanderbijlpark Campus.

This year’s conference theme is “Celebrating Scholarship: Connecting the Lights”, and participants from South African higher education institutions are welcome to be part of the event.

Vickey de Villiers, a master’s student in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the North-West University (NWU), recently received the 2022 Founder’s Medal by the Economic Society of South Africa for the best master’s research paper submitted at a South African university.

A group of women from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Agricultural Sciences recently reached out to unemployed agriculture graduates to empower and motivate them.

This group, Basadi ba Temo Thuo – which means women in agriculture – hosted an information day at the Mahikeng Campus’s Molelwane Farm.

The purpose of the event, themed "A re fepeng malapa a rona" (Let's take care of our homes), was to provide valuable insights into daily routine management practices within the agricultural sector.

The Centre for Health and Human Performance (CHHP) at the North-West University (NWU), in collaboration with Autism South Africa and the South Africa-Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (SA-ACAPAP) hosted the eighth National Autism Symposium from 8 to 10 September in Potchefstroom.

The bodybuilding team on the North-West University’s (NWU's) Vanderbijlpark Campus has again brought home significant wins. The team recently participated in the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) National Championships in Emalahleni, Mpumalanga, and emerged victorious in several categories.

Mandlakayise Jonga was named the overall winner in the Senior Men's Physique category, while Moses Paneng took third place and Mthokozisi Zuma sixth place. Ayanda Piyo emerged as the winner in the Senior Man Classic Physique category.

Dr Piet Ntema, a statistics lecturer on the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, has authored a new book to inspire individuals who have encountered obstacles and setbacks in their lives.

Titled The Sunrise Of The Underdogs, Dr Ntema says the book is dedicated to all those who have been counted out, underestimated and told that their dreams were beyond reach.
