The Career Centre Services at the North-West University (NWU) has once again hosted another round of successful career fairs.
The series kicked off at the Vanderbijlpark Campus on 9 April, followed by events at the Mahikeng Campus on 12 April. On the Potchefstroom Campus, a general fair and specialised fairs focusing on accounting, engineering, science and law took place on 11, 16, 17 and 18 April.
About 5 930 students and alumni from diverse disciplines within the NWU university community attended the fairs across all three campuses.
These fairs provided not only networking opportunities, but also highlighted the wide array of options awaiting graduates in today's dynamic professional landscape. Students gained insight into the exciting and innovative industries shaping the global economy's future, and discovered a myriad of career paths and opportunities.
Career Centre Services manager Thoriso Maseng emphasised the university’s dedication to promoting academic excellence and preparing students for successful transitions into the workforce through such initiatives.
“We are committed to providing students with the tools they need to succeed in their chosen careers and to prepare them for successful transitions into the workforce.
“This year, the turnout of companies was exceptional, with 122 companies participating in the career fairs across all the three campuses. Compared to last year's career fair where 113 companies showcased their trades, this year's event is still on par with our set target. We are thrilled to have such a high number of companies showcase their opportunities to students, as this is an excellent opportunity for students to explore their career options,” he said.
In addition to the career fairs, Career Centre Services also offers a range of resources to help students prepare for their future careers. These services include workshops, career counselling, coaching, work readiness seminars and résumé and cover letter writing assistance. Their latest offering, a work readiness short learning programme, shows their commitment to helping students build their skills and confidence to enable them to take on the workforce with ease.
Thoriso expressed his gratitude to other NWU stakeholders for their support in making the event a success. “I also want to thank the career service team for their diligent work; and especially employer engagement specialist on the Vanderbijlpark Campus and project manager for the fairs, Hloni Putsoane.”
By facilitating connections between students and employers, Career Centre Services contribute to shaping the future of the South African economy by providing employers with talented, skilled, and motivated graduates.
The NWU Career Fairs on the Mahikeng, Potchefstroom and Vanderbijlpark campuses were a great success.
