You did it again, boys. Today, I can barely contain my pride after your immense performance in the 2024 Varsity Young Guns final against Shimlas in Bloemfontein. Not only did you beat your opponents on their home turf 39-36, but you did so in spectacular fashion with a try at the death.
In doing so, you have ensured that the North-West University (NWU) is Young Guns champions for the second consecutive year. What an achievement!
As defending champions, you did not rest on your laurels, and you didn’t shy away from any challenge. When you fell, you stood up. When you chased, it was with all your heart. When you jumped, it was as high as you could, when you scrummed, it was with all your might. You left everything on the field, and you did it weekly.
It is always a privilege to be part of something special, and this team is special. I hope you realise that. You have cemented your legacy as a great sporting team, and I want you to embrace that feeling. Enjoy it.
You showed your strength, you believed in your talents and you trusted your abilities, but it was your courage that separated you from your opponents.
I also want to commend coach Hannes Esterhuizen and all the support staff for what they have achieved behind the scenes. The team’s success is evidence of your commitment and expertise. Your team has been immense on the field, you have been flag bearers for the NWU, and you are a reflection of our institution that aims for excellence and achieves greatness.
A last word for our team: I am proud of you, the NWU is proud of you. You are the best Young Guns in the country, but you also truly are Eagles.
