NWU’s Dr Sweetness had to face a lot of sour

It took only a few seconds for her to lose weeks of her life. After her Toyota Yaris had crashed head-on into a bakkie, she was trapped in a cocoon of unconsciousness and when she awoke her world had irrevocably changed. Torturous years of rehabilitation were to follow. Initially she was forgetful, frightened, frantically searching and frequently failing to find a coherent memory.

Academic lauds Transport Department's nanotechnology road rescue

North-West University (NWU) academic and professor in chemistry, Prof Lebo Seru, has praised the Department of Transport’s announcement that they will be embarking on a pioneering plan to reinforce collapsing roads in the North West province through the innovative application of nanotechnology.

The department has committed to launching a pilot programme that will harness the potential of nanotechnology to transform road construction, enhance road surfaces and curb water seepage.

The Student RAG Community Service (SRCS) is a community engagement initiative of the North-West University (NWU) based on the Potchefstroom Campus and is the largest student-driven community engagement initiative in the southern hemisphere. It is a unique NWU tradition that you will find in few other places. North West High Court judges lead NWU-Juta Mock Trials

A full bench of North West High Court judges presided over the annual North-West University (NWU)-Juta Mock Trial finals held at the High Court in Mahikeng on 7 August 2023.

Leading the panel was Deputy Judge President Tebogo Djaje, accompanied by esteemed justices Francies Reid, André Petersen and Myron Dewrance.

North West Judge President Ronald Hendricks viewed the proceedings from the gallery.

NWU welcomes sign language to South Africa’s official language family

It was a long time coming, but on Wednesday, 19 July, Cyril Ramaphosa, the South African president, officially recognised South African Sign Language as South Africa’s 12th official language.

This makes South Africa only the fourth country in Africa to recognise sign language as an official language and, according to Dr Keaobaka Seshoka, director of the Language Directorate at the North-West University (NWU), it is a belated but very welcome addition to the country’s official language family.

Bodybuilding team rakes in awards at provincials

The bodybuilding team from the North-West University (NWU)'s Vanderbijlpark Campus had a successful run at the University Sports South Africa (USSA) provincials, walking away with eight trophies and three medals.

The team's impressive performance included five first-place finishes, one second place, and two third places.

The team's success at the provincials has also led to 11 bodybuilders qualifying to represent the NWU at the national USSA competition in eMalahleni, Mpumalanga from 1 to 3 September.

Vanderbijlpark Campus’s landscaping wins an award

Rothe Plantscapers’ landscaping on the North-West University’s (NWU's) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently scored the garden maintenance company a silver award at the South African Landscape Institute’s (SALI’s) Awards of Excellence ceremony.

As a principal member of the institute, Rothe Plantscapers submitted the Vanderbijlpark Campus as an entry, and their outstanding landscaping work earned them the award for their exemplary performance within the 75% to 84% range.
