Football administration and coaching have long been dominated by men all around the world, but the winds of change are blowing. Recently more women have entered this male-dominated sport, either as administrators or coaches.

One such shining star is Azania Amogelang Moshushu, head coach of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) women’s team. She holds a BSc degree in human movement and sports science and, after obtaining her first coaching licence (Introduction to coaching development), she received the Central African Football (CAF) C licence for coaching.

With the Varsity Football tournament starting soon, the North-West University (NWU) team and reigning champions are ready to defend the title.

Coach Karabo Masehela says he is confident that his team is 100% ready.

“We know as the current champions that every team will be going all out for us, so we are saying to them, bring it on! I have been working with some exciting talent, and we are more than ready,” he says.

In South Africa, despite gains achieved for women, engineering roles in numerous organisations are still predominantly occupied by men. To encourage more young girls to study towards science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) qualifications, the Faculty of Engineering at the North-West University (NWU) kicked off its Femmengineering initiative in 2015.

The THE World University Rankings have again, like in last year’s ranking, placed the North-West University (NWU) among the top six universities in South Africa. Globally, the NWU is ranked between 501 and 600 out of more than 1 600 universities across 99 countries and regions that were evaluated for the 2022 rankings.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa recently applied to the Constitutional Court to postpone the local government elections that are due to be held on 27 October 2021.

This is following the Moseneke Commission report which recommended the postponement of the October 2021 local government elections due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

North-West University (NWU) academic Dr Tshepang Molale believes approaching the Court was not the best possible route to resolve the situation that the IEC finds itself in.
