The fight against GBV

Every few months South Africa is rocked by a gender-based violence (GBV) story that leaves most citizens in disbelief. Recently a final year law student’s mutilated body was found in a plastic bag in East London. Her intimate partner was arrested for the alleged crime. This incident sent shockwaves across the country and intensified the need for more prevention and education around GBV.

Flexibility and staying positive are key to boosting tourism

A North-West University (NWU) academic at the School of Tourism Management is calling for fresh and innovative thinking to boost the local tourism sector, which has declined by almost 80% since 2019.

Prof Peet van der Merwe says there has recently been a slight increase in international visitors to South Africa, but nowhere near the volumes needed to boost tourism.

NWU to host colloquium on decolonising Christianity

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and Faculty of Theology will be hosting a virtual colloquium on 8 September 2021 on decolonising Christianity and its implications for preparing future ministers.

According to Prof Emmanuel Mgqwashu, CTL’s director for faculty teaching and learning support, one cannot ignore how both the oppressed and the oppressor have used Christianity in the past to justify opposing beliefs and actions in a post-colonial, post-apartheid and post-conflict context.
