Sibongiseni Buthelezi, a third-year BSc computer science, mathematics and statistics student at the North-West University (NWU), has been chosen as one of the experts to train competitors taking part in the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Future Skills Challenge that will take place in China from 1 to 6 November.

In this challenge, individuals and/or teams from BRICS countries work on real-world problems in their specific skill areas to develop solutions using their specialised skills and experiences.

Students and staff from the North-West University (NWU) recently attended a national gender-based awareness campaign, dubbed #UniversitiesAgainstGender-BasedViolence, hosted by Wits University.

Under the banner of Practitioners against Gender-based Violence (GBV) in South African Universities, Community of Practice (CoP) representatives – consisting of students and staff – marched to raise awareness about gender, gender-based harm, overall gender relations and queerphobia.

Like load-shedding, fuel price hikes in South Africa are so frequent that we have become desensitised to them. When a hike is announced, we hear of it and go about our daily lives. However, increases in fuel prices have an impact on more than just the ultimate delivery costs of products. Transport plays a crucial role in the supply chain. The concept of supply chain management refers to the comprehensive process of sourcing and transforming raw materials into a usable final product for retail sale.

The North-West University (NWU), in partnership with SAS DataFly, a free resource that offers a fun and engaging way to explore data with students in real time, recently hosted a Teachers4DataAnalytics workshop for mathematics and science teachers.

The event was held at the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus and was organised by statistics lecturers from the NWU and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN).

Themed "Embracing our value of inclusivity", the event started with a colour walk from the RAG Farm to building A13, where a Pride Wall that depicts the LGBTIQA+ rainbow pride flag* was unveiled. The NWU’s male netball team was also introduced

Student leaders and management of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently celebrated Arbor Month by planting 40 trees on campus and outside residences.

Recent crime statistics show that 898 women were killed in South Africa from January to March 2022, and 282 cases of attempted murder against women were reported. During this period 10 818 women reported rapes, of which 4 653 took place at the home of the rape victim or the home of the rapist.

The North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently celebrated Administrative Professionals' Day 2022 in recognition of the important contribution that administrative professionals make each year in the workplace.

The event held at the Small Lapa saw secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals from the different faculties, departments and divisions being treated to a full breakfast. 

Mojalefa Motaung, North-West University's (NWU's) outgoing Vanderbijlpark Student Campus Council (SCC) president and Student Representative Council (SRC) deputy president, has his sights set on making his mark in the business world. The 22-year-old owns Roar Clothing, a thriving clothing line.  

All public and private organisations must deal with the systemic risks of our complex world. However, such inherent complex risks are difficult to manage even where significant resources have been utilised in implementing formal risk management frameworks and related processes.

It is therefore important for organisational leaders to actively explore new methods to enhance the contribution of risk management processes when they are trying to reach their objectives, says Prof Hermien Zaaiman from the Optentia research unit of the North-West University (NWU).
