Nurses on the frontline: Unveiling the challenges of Covid-19 patient care

A recent study conducted by Dr Joan Dikobe from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Nursing Science sheds light on the lived experiences of nurses as they cared for patients diagnosed with Covid-19.

As frontline healthcare workers, they are fundamental to the healthcare system, and play a crucial role in ensuring the continuity and quality of care to the patient.

Dr Dikobe says the study aimed to examine the physical, psychological, and social experiences of nurses as they provided care to Covid-19 patients in the North West province.

Inaugural lecture delves into export diversification in Sub-Saharan Africa

Prof Ireen Choga from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences delivered her inaugural lecture on 24 August 2023.

Her lecture was titled “Exports and export Diversification: key drivers and trends in Sub-Saharan Africa”.

She says this was not only an academic turning point, but also a deeply personal milestone for her.

Academic shines bright at Oxford innovation boot camp

Prof Rose Hayeshi, associate professor at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) DSI/NWU Preclinical Drug Development Platform has just returned from the United Kingdom after a week-long innovation boot camp at the University of Oxford.

Prof Hayeshi was one of the 10 participants selected to deliver demo pitches, after which her presentation was chosen as one of the top five pitches.

NWU alumnus honoured for teaching excellence

North-West University (NWU) alumnus and dedicated educator Tumelo Malebelela clinched the prestigious Teacher's Award in the "Excellence in Secondary Teaching" category during the North West Provincial Teaching Awards ceremony on 18 August 2023.

"I am deeply honoured to stand among the accomplished winners of the Teaching Awards. The flood of congratulatory messages I have received is truly overwhelming. I never imagined that one day I would represent our entire province on a national platform," says Tumelo, and educator at ZM Seatlholo Secondary School in Lotlhakane, Mahikeng.

Educating the youth on the significance of saving

The North-West University (NWU) and PSG Wealth recently joined forces to present a guest lecture series to promote financial literacy and educate the youth on the significance of saving.

Recognising the importance of financial education among young adults, PSG Wealth identified an opportunity to inspire the upcoming generation of South African citizens to value saving.

The initiative took shape when Izelle Coetzee, NWU alumnus and certified financial planner® at PSG Wealth, reached out to Dr Danelle Fourie, a lecturer at the School of Management Sciences.

Wellness campaign focuses on men’s well-being

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Wellness office, in collaboration with the health clinics across its three campuses, recently launched a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) awareness campaign.

This campaign focused on encouraging male students and staff to know their bodies, teaching them about prostate cancer and how going for a regular PSA test can identify early warning signs.

PSA is a protein produced by the prostate gland and high levels can indicate inflammation of the prostate or cancer.

They were crowned during a beauty pageant hosted by the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Arts and Culture office on 12 August 2023.

This event is hosted annually to provide a platform for students to showcase and enhance their talents and to express themselves through public speaking.

Celebrating the importance of women

The Arts and Culture office on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus recently hosted a Women’s Month celebration event themed “My sister’s keeper”.

The purpose of the event was to celebrate women and the importance of mental health. Discussions focused on the importance of therapy, self-love, sharing personal experiences on mental health, spirituality, self-confidence and taking charge.
