On International Chess Day – annually celebrated on 20 July, students from the North-West University (NWU) made a remarkable impression at a chess tournament hosted by the Chess Powerhouse in Sandton.
Demonstrating exceptional skill and strategic prowess, Innocent Phahlaa and Neo Warambwa secured both the first and third positions in the event.
The tournament attracted top-tier players from various institutions, making the victories even more significant for the NWU participants. Innocent showcased extraordinary talent, consistently outshining opponents and exhibiting a deep understanding of the game’s complexities, earning him first place. “I'm honored to be part of this NWU chess community, and I look forward to many more exciting battles on the board,” he says.
Finishing in third place, Neo also displayed impressive strategic thinking and resilience throughout the tournament. “I felt a mix of excitement and relief after winning. It was satisfying to see my strategy pay off and to have all the hard work and practice come together," he explains.
The success of these students underscores the university's commitment to fostering talent and promoting extracurricular activities that enhance students' academic and personal growth. The chess programme at the NWU continues to thrive, inspiring more students to take up the game and strive for excellence.
