Crucial win against UWC boosts morale

The North-West University (NWU) football team scored a crucial win in the second round of Varsity Football, defeating the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in an away game.

Displaying confidence and bravery, the NWU secured the victory through Momelezi Mngati, who scored the only goal of the match. Coach Nkululeko Malgas says this victory is a great morale booster.

Reflecting on their progress, Coach Malgas notes significant improvement since their opening match loss to the University of the Free State (UFS), emphasising the need for continued growth. "Although we create numerous scoring chances, converting them all remains challenging. However, it's better to generate these opportunities than to have none," he says.

Looking ahead, the NWU faces a tough test against their next opponents, the University of Pretoria (UP), a team they have never beaten in any competition. "They’re strong contenders with a lot of work behind their success. As the UP team is the current USSA University Sports South Africa champion, we will have to give it our all,” adds coach Malgas.

Currently, the NWU is placed fourth on the Varsity Football log with one win and one loss.

The game against UP will be played on Thursday, 8 August 2024 at Tuks Stadium.
