Occupational hygiene students visit industry partners

Fourth-year occupational hygiene students and staff from the Faculty of Health Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) recently visited two industry partners, enriching their educational experience with real-world insights.

Prof Anja Franken from the subject group Occupational Hygiene says their first stop was at Aquatico Scientific in Centurion.

The group was warmly welcomed by Pierre Maree, Paul Naude and Anri Joubert, whereafter Paul provided an introduction to the company and its facilities, focusing on XRD analytical methods used for analysing crystalline silica content.

The students were given a comprehensive tour of the laboratories, which allowed them to witness the behind-the-scenes operations of an analytical lab, a rare opportunity for many in the occupational hygiene field. This immersive experience was followed by a wholesome lunch and a chance to network with the Aquatico CEO Ryno Erdmann and other team members.

Next up was a visit to Momentum Wellness Occupational Hygiene Services, where they were greeted by Kobus Louw, Dr Monica Young and the rest of the team.

The students explored the facilities and equipment of the Approved Inspection Authority (AIA), including laboratories for asbestos and gravimetric analysis used in measuring personal dust and asbestos exposure. The Momentum Wellness team explained the inner workings of the AIA, their functions and travel requirements.

During the Q&A session, students asked about the key characteristics sought in job applicants. “The Momentum team emphasised the importance of decisiveness, confidence and the ability to stand their ground in challenging situations,” says Prof Franken.

“Industry visits are integral to the work-integrated learning component of the BHSc in occupational hygiene degree. These visits provide invaluable networking opportunities and a practical understanding of the workplace, which are essential for our students' professional development and for the NWU to deliver well-rounded graduates," she adds.
