With a spot on the NWU first team, first-year North-West University (NWU) student Lucky Letwaba is gearing up to make a significant impact in the 2024 Varsity Football tournament.
He will be following in the footsteps of star player Heaven Sereetsi, who caught the eye of Premier Soccer League team Cape Town City in 2023.
Born and raised in Soweto, Lucky's football journey began at the age of six. He started with makeshift goals and friends as teammates, spending hours perfecting his skills. This raw talent eventually attracted local scouts and coaches.
Despite limited opportunities in his community, Lucky's determination remained steadfast. "Football has always been a passion of mine," Lucky stays, reflecting on his early years. "Growing up in Soweto, the love for the game was a driving force."
Before joining the NWU, Lucky played for Sekhukhune United FC and Mike Stars Academy. His journey took a pivotal turn when he was selected to represent the NWU in the Confederation of University and College Sports Association tournament. This tournament showcases top university teams competing for regional dominance.
Lucky made an immediate impact, playing a crucial role in South Africa's triumph. "Representing the NWU and contributing to our victory was a significant milestone. It fuelled my ambition to reach greater heights in varsity football."
As he prepares for the upcoming tournament, Lucky remains focused and optimistic. "This tournament is a chance for me to prove myself at university level," he explains. "I want to contribute to our team's success and hopefully catch the eye of professional scouts who might be watching."
His pre-match ritual involves a moment of reflection and visualisation. "I like to visualise myself making key passes, scoring goals, and helping my team win. It helps me stay focused and mentally prepared for the challenges ahead."
Lucky hopes his performance in the varsity tournament will open doors beyond university football, potentially leading to professional opportunities. "Playing professionally is a dream of mine," he says. "I believe this tournament can be a stepping stone towards that goal."
His time with Sekhukhune United and Mike Stars Academy has equipped him with valuable skills and resilience. Now at the NWU, he aims to showcase his talents on a larger stage. "My experience with previous teams has prepared me well, and I'm ready to take on new challenges and prove myself."
Every match is a chance for Lucky to honour his roots, pursue his dreams, and inspire others. "I want to be an example for young athletes in my community. Hard work and dedication can help you achieve your dreams."
As Lucky gears up for the 2024 Varsity Football tournament, he remains grounded yet driven. "I'm grateful for this opportunity. I look forward to making the most of it and seeing where my football journey takes me."
