Nursing students impress at WorldSkills competition

Two fourth-year nursing students recently represented the North-West University (NWU) at the WorldSkills South Africa competition in Durban.

Competing against six other participants from across the country, Nobuhle Noluthando Motlhare secured the top spot in the Health and Social Care Skills category, while Boitshwarelo Motlhokudi secured a commendable third place, earning herself a bronze medal.

Empowering first-year students with the right touch

The North-West University's (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus recently launched Project First Touch to create a warm and welcoming environment for first-year students as they embark on their university journey.

The primary objective of the project – spearheaded by Prof Sonia Swanepoel, deputy vice-chancellor for community engagement and Mahikeng Campus operations – is to provide comfort and instil a sense of belonging in first-year students as they transition into university life.

Academic honoured with international fellowship

North-West University (NWU) academic Prof Olubukola Oluranti Babalola has been awarded an honourary fellowship by the International Science Council in Paris, France.

This fellowship is the highest accolade the ISC can bestow on an individual, and acknowledges their exceptional efforts in advancing science as a global public good.

The ISC is a non-governmental organisation with a unique global membership that brings together more than 245 international scientific unions and associations, including academies, research councils, federations and societies.

Ladies football team crowned 2023 stream B USSA champions

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus ladies football team has been crowned stream B University Sports South Africa (USSA) champions after they defeated Nelson Mandela University by 1-0 in the final of the tournament hosted at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology from 4 to 8 December 2023.

Alumni Relations office raises funds to support graduating students

To assist struggling final-year students at North-West University (NWU), the Alumni Relations office hosted various events and successfully raised R90 000. This helps students with outstanding debts of R5 000 or less to clear their financial obligations and graduate in 2024.

The cheque was presented to Prof Sonia Swanepoel, deputy vice-chancellor for community engagement and Mahikeng Campus operations, during the staff year-end function on 24 November 2023.

Empowering change: uniting against gender-based violence

Through a collaborative effort between the North-West University (NWU) and the universities of Pretoria, Venda, and Limpopo, the Ubuntu Community Model in Nursing hosted a poignant gender-based violence (GBV) awareness event at the Mahikeng Provincial Hospital on 21 November.

The event, strategically aligned with the annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, aimed to draw attention to the pressing issue of GBV.

Life-changing experience awaits Mahikeng Campus Tourism students

205 Meeting Street, Charleston, South Carolina 29401, United States. Here, on the doorstep of the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by low-country marshes, is where nine BA Honours in Tourism Management students from the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) will call home when they embark on a journey of a lifetime on 21 November.

Their destination is the five-star Charleston Place hotel, and their stay in the Palmetto State – a nickname acquired from its most famous tree – will last four exciting months and is a paid internship facilitated by Awesome Travel.

Will young people turn out to register to vote this weekend?

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it is ready for this weekend’s voter registration (18 - 19 November) and is urging the youth to make use of this opportunity to be able to vote in next year's local and national elections.

However, Naledi Modise, lecturer in politics and international relations at the North-West University (NWU), notes that the North West province has among the lowest turnouts in the country, with only 42,36% of registered voters turning out to  vote in the 2021 local government elections.

NWU celebrates Child Health Day with Stadt Primary School

To mark Child Health Day, the Faculty of Health Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) organised some fun activities for the youngsters at Stadt Primary School to highlight the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Learners and parents from the school in Mahikeng’s Montshioa-Stadt village attended the event at the Ratshidi Hall on 12 October 2023. The aim of the event was not only to raise awareness about a healthy lifestyle, but also to collect data and encourage a good relationship with the local community.
