Enter the “courtroom”! NWU-Juta Mock Trials return with in-person competition

The popular annual NWU-Juta Mock Trials competition is back in full force, with last year’s virtual format making way for an in-person competition this year.

“We are very excited to have everyone back in our mock courtroom,” says Adv René Koraan, director of Professional Development and Community Engagement and senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law on the Potchefstroom Campus. She says the competition is an excellent opportunity for second- and third-year students to gain much-needed experience.

NWU students to take part in the African Human Rights Moot Court Competition

Two North-West University (NWU) students – Africa Thaba from the Mahikeng Campus and Denise Geel from the Potchefstroom Campus – have been selected to represent the NWU at the 31st Christof Heyns African Human Rights Moot Court Competition. The competition will take place at British University in Cairo, Egypt from 25 to 30 July 2022.

The two final-year LLB students will be accompanied by NWU Faculty of Law representative Advocate Getsia Zazo, who has been helping the two with preparations.

How regulating mobile money can boost financial inclusion

North-West University (NWU) LLD candidate Elfas Torrerai has done a statutory analysis of the use and regulation of mobile money to promote financial inclusion in developing countries.

The title of his study is “A comparative statutory analysis of the use and regulation of mobile money to promote financial inclusion for the poor in Zimbabwe”.

NWU cross country runner has his sights set on the stars

North-West University (NWU) student Itumeleng Sesiko is an upcoming athletic star. He won his first national medal at the age of 10 from Athletics South Africa (ASA) and is now on his way to becoming a professional cross country athlete.

Itumeleng is set to represent the NWU athletics team at the North West Province N12 ULTRA Marathon which will take place on 30 July 2022. On that day four different races will be run, and he will be taking part in the 10 km road race that will start and end at the Klerksdorp Recreation Centre.

Young LLD graduate is wise beyond his years

At the tender age of 25, Phemelo Theophilus Magau has completed a daunting challenge: he finished his Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree in just two years.

He was awarded his LLD in mercantile law during an autumn graduation ceremony at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus on 25 May 2022.

Phemelo’s PhD thesis was “A comparative legal analysis of the promotion of financial education for low-income earners in South Africa”.

Law professor improves previous NRF rating of C to a great B

Prof Christa Rautenbach’s hard work on legal pluralism and cultural diversity finally paid off when she received a B-rating in the highly competitive rating process of the National Research Foundation (NRF).

One of her reviewers remarked that her “research is significant for legal pluralism and development in postcolonial developmental settings, where law reforms must be mindful of the continued relevance of indigenous laws”.

Cyberattacks likely to increase as connectivity grows

Cyberattacks are occurring thick and fast as the world becomes more connected and the rewards greater.
According to a North-West University (NWU) academic, the possible rewards for cyberattackers will continue to increase, as more aspects of our everyday lives become interwoven and reliant on online interaction.

Prof Wian Erlank from the Faculty of Law says he keeps a watch on cybersecurity developments to understand how these affect other areas of law on which he conducts research.

NWU joins forces with Black Lawyers Association to deliver market-ready litigators 

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Law and the Black Lawyers Association Legal Education Centre (BLA-LEC) has committed to producing market-ready lawyers through a memorandum of agreement signed on 11 November 2021.

 The agreement, signed at the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus is for a period of three years.
