Career day empowers alumni

The North-West University (NWU) Alumni Office in partnership with the Career Centre hosted a Career Empowerment seminar on 19 April at the Vanderbijlpark Campus.

The event was well-attended and provided valuable information and resources to alumni seeking advice on their career paths.

Minister appoints NWU’s Research Support director to Water Research Commission

Expert knowledge is needed to protect and manage water, an essential and scarce natural resource. As a relatively dry country, South Africa faces crucial challenges that include insufficient water, water quality problems, inadequate infrastructure and inconsistency in access.

The Water Research Commission (WRC) plays an integral role in enabling the country to address these issues. One of the NWU’s own is now stepping up to play a part in this commission’s important work.

From ideation to commercialisation – that is impactful NWU research

The Technology Transfer and Innovation Support (TTIS) office at the North-West University (NWU) is helping innovators and entrepreneurs to realise their dreams.

When a third-year BCom student, Irene Nompini Tsele, conceived her idea for a cosmetics business, little did she know that partnering with the university’s TTIS office would one day make her business flourish.

NWU goes green

The environment encompasses all living and non-living things, and we see how negative impacts harm the environment. Human beings need to understand the environment and the impact of human behaviour that causes climate change, resulting in soil erosion, poor air quality and undrinkable water.

With the aim of creating greater consciousness about the environment, the North-West University (NWU) hosted Green Week, which is also known as Environment Week.

Teaching entrepreneurs to protect their intellectual property

Entrepreneurs should deal with challenges in their own communities, conduct thorough research, and protect their intellectual capital on their way to monetising their unique ideas.

They received this advice recently when the North-West University (NWU) hosted the 4th annual Intellectual Property and Technology Commercialisation Colloquium under the theme: “Driving innovation and positioning Intellectual Property Commercialisation for post Covid-19 pandemic.”

People and culture take their show on the road

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) People and Culture division recently hosted a "People and Culture and Employee Wellness Roadshow" on the university’s three campuses.

NWU employees were assisted with and received information on People and Culture matters such as conditions of employment, performance management, learning and development, employment equity and many more.

Staff members were also treated to health screenings, massages, nail care, biokinetic assessments, medical aid advice, and received information about various topics such as bone marrow donation.

NWU’s Ikateleng project marks its 35th anniversary

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) flagship Ikateleng project is still going strong after 35 years, empowering school children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Ikateleng, which means empower yourself, provides supplementary teaching in mathematics, economics, business studies, accounting, life science, physical science and English to high school learners.

Vanderbiljlpark Campus community welcomes Dr McCallaghan’s appointment

Dr Sean McCallaghan, recently appointed director for student life on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, says his vision for Student Life is to continue creating a differentiating and inclusive environment for students.

Dr McCallaghan, who holds a PhD in business administration and management from the NWU, will assume his role on 1 March 2023, succeeding the late Jacob Simango who passed away in June last year.

Admired for his readiness to mentor and support students, his appointment has been widely welcomed by the university community.

Nico’s sailing team cruises its way to national championships

North-West University (NWU) senior IT technician Nico Kroucamp is brimming with pride as his sailing team, Albatross, won three regattas in the last three months.

The three regattas the four-member team won, were the SA Sailing 75th Anniversary Regatta, the King of the Vaal Regatta and the L26 Class 2023 Free State provincials. The team is now awaiting an invitation to compete for national honours in KwaZulu-Natal.
