Noord-Vaal Cross Country competition broadens its horizons

On Saturday 26 August, talented athletes from 40 secondary and six primary schools participated in the Noord-Vaal Cross Country competition hosted by the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus and Hoërskool DR Malan in Meyerton.

The event brought together talented athletes from Vanderbijlpark, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Meyerton and Potchefstroom.

Taking place along the picturesque banks of the Vaal River, participants immersed themselves in the stunning surroundings as they navigated the cross-country course.

A total of 620 athletes participated in the event which drew more than 1 000 spectators and was broadcast live on SuperSport School Sport channel 216.

Prof Linda du Plessis, deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, says it was an honour to host the various schools.

“The purpose of the event was not only to compete, but also to foster a sense of community and camaraderie among all participating schools. I am also pleased that we had an opportunity to give prospective students a glimpse into the vibrant academic and social life that our university has to offer. Perhaps this event inspired some of these young athletes to consider joining our university in the future," she adds.

“Previously, only the Vaal Triangle schools used our exceptional facilities, but other schools have now joined and they are very impressed by what the Vanderbijlpark Campus has to offer,” says senior marketer Piet van Wyk.

“Seeing the great sportsmanship and athletes sharing in each other's achievements was the most enjoyable part of the whole event.”
