Mahikeng schools’ soccer championship showcases young talent

On 7 October 2023 the North-West University (NWU) hosted the final of the NWU Mahikeng Schools Soccer Championship at the Soccer Institute.

This initiative was born from the vision of educators and coaches from secondary schools in the Mahikeng district to have an annual soccer tournament to foster camaraderie, sportsmanship and healthy competition among learners. Their goal was to establish a prestigious yearly tournament for secondary schools aspiring to be crowned the annual champion.

Recognising the importance of being involved with its communities, the NWU sponsored the final event and encouraged the Mahikeng community to actively support the young talent showcasing their skills.

Golf View Secondary School and Curro Academy Mahikeng displayed their prowess in the final, with Golfview winning the game 5-0.

Coach Bakang Tshepo Mohotlheng of Golf View Secondary School expressed his pride in the team's performance, emphasising his commitment to keeping young individuals off the streets and offering them valuable experiences within a team environment.

Prof Sonia Swanepoel, deputy vice-chancellor for community engagement and Mahikeng Campus operations, congratulated the players and presented trophies to the standout individuals and coaches.
