Six NWU athletes compete in African Championships in Ghana

Six athletes from the North-West University (NWU) are representing South Africa at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, placing the university among the country’s strongest contributors to the national team.

The championships, organised by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) and being hosted at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra from 12 to 17 May, will bring together some of the continent’s leading track and field athletes.

Cheerleading team secures double victory after late competition entry

The cheerleading team on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus turned a last-minute opportunity into a major achievement. They secured top honours in both the Pom and Hip-Hop categories at an intervarsity competition held on 1 May.

The team received an invitation to participate from the Central University of Technology (CUT) on 17 April, leaving them less than two weeks to prepare.

Visually impaired student graduates cum laude

From dropping out of university twice to graduating cum laude, visually impaired student Raphael Sambo has turned a once-fractured academic journey into a story of distinction.

Raphael earned his postgraduate diploma in management from the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the North-West University (NWU), achieving a milestone he describes as the result of persistence, resilience and critical support from the university’s disability services.

Coach Malgas targets playoff spot in crucial clash

The North-West University’s (NWU) Soccer Institute is preparing for a decisive clash against Belligerators FC on Saturday, 25 April, at Mmabatho Stadium. They are hoping secure their place in the provincial playoffs of the South African Football Association (SAFA) Motsepe League.

While the road to this match has not always been smooth for the team, they have emerged stronger from the challenges, including squad changes and scheduling issues, according to head coach Nkululenko Malgas.

NWU expands student mental-health support with SADAG roll-out

The North-West University (NWU) will roll out a new mental-health support system this month, bringing a national crisis network onto its campuses as demand for student support continues to rise.

The university has partnered with the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) to provide counselling, crisis intervention and support services to all registered students.

Academic support programme introduced to address students’ concern

The Students’ Campus Council (SCC) at the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) has introduced academic support programme to address student concerns related to academic matters and services offered by faculties.

The initiative was developed in response to ongoing student concerns about marks, credits, graduation outcomes and GPA calculations. It will take place twice a month for six months from 10:00 to 16:00 near the SCC offices and aims to connect students with faculty support through student leaders.
