90 minutes from the First Division: NWU chases historic promotion

The North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute is just 90 minutes away from securing its place in South African professional football.

After topping Group A of the ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs in Mthatha, the North West champions have booked a semi-final showdown against KwaZulu-Natal champions Mkhambathi FC, with promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship at stake.

NWU basketball star selected for USSA national team to participate at the 2026 CUCSA games

  • Third-Year North-West University (NWU) Public Governance student and talented basketball player Koketso Mafate has been selected to represent the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Basketball team at the 2026 Confederation of Universities and College Sports Association (CUCSA) Games.

Every NWU student shapes the future this Youth Month

Every student at the North-West University (NWU) is helping to shape the future of our country. During Youth Month, we shift our focus to the youth of 1976, who helped fight for equal and inclusive education. They continue to inspire the youth of today to strive for a better future.

Tshepo Tlaka, the NWU Eagles Varsity Cup player of 2026, said that Youth Month has a significant meaning for him.

NWU and Taletso TVET College strengthen ties through strategic engagement

A North-West University (NWU) delegation, led by the deputy vice-chancellor for student life, transformation, people and culture with assigned function of the Mahikeng Campus, Dr Joe Molete, recently held a strategic engagement with the leadership of the Taletso TVET College.

This engagement was aimed at strengthening institutional relations and exploring collaborative opportunities between the two institutions.

Real financial know-how reaches students across three campuses

Most students will tell you that nobody teaches you how to actually handle money. You learn about compound interest in a textbook, maybe, but nobody sits you down and explains what to do when you are drowning in debt, tempted by a flashy investment scheme, or just trying to make a grocery budget stretch to the end of the month. The NWU Student Leadership Academy, working alongside the Student Representative Council, set out to change that and, in the first week of May 2026, it did.

Indigenous foods still shape diets in Mahikeng communities

Pumpkin leaves, sorghum porridge and bone marrow remain on the menu in parts of Mahikeng, even as younger generations drift toward processed foods. A new study by Modjadji Mandy Rasehlomi, a North-West University (NWU) master’s student, found that indigenous foods continue to support dietary diversity, household nutrition and the preservation of indigenous knowledge in communities in the Mahikeng Local Municipality.
