NWU delegation attends international conference on Russia–Ukraine crisis

North-West University (NWU) academics recently attended an international conference themed "The Russia–Ukraine Crisis and its Impact on Africa".

The conference, jointly organised by the Institute of African Diaspora Studies (IADS) and GLOTAN Research Services at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, took place on 16 and 17 November 2022.

NWU lecturer walks away with prestigious engineering award

Meelan Roopa, a lecturer in the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Engineering, received the award for Best Industrial Engineering Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the Southern African Institute for Industrial Engineering’s (SAIIE’s) 2022 awards ceremony.

Meelan received this prestigious award in recognition of his teaching prowess in business engineering, a capstone module for final-year industrial engineering students.

NWU’s History subject group concludes successful history seminar series

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) History subject group recently hosted Prof Jill Kelly, assistant professor of History at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, USA as part of its history seminar series.

The seminar, held in hybrid format and hosted by the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus, attracted students and staff members across the NWU and external scholars.

Prof Kelly presented a paper titled “A woman doctor and activist: Healing, politics, and policing in the life of Dr Margaret Chuene Mncadi”.

Decision to raise interest rate conveys strong message on dealing with inflation

“In line with market expectations, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in a majority vote of three to two raised the repo rate by another 75 basis points, with a minority view favouring a 50 basis-point increase.”

Prof Raymond Parsons, economist from the Business School of the North-West University (NWU), says the statement and decision by the MPC on 24 November conveyed a further strong message about how the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) intends dealing with inflation in South Africa.

NWU celebrates its exponents of excellence

The North-West University (NWU) celebrated its torchbearers of excellence ― one of the university’s core values ― during the university’s Excellence Awards for 2021/2022.

The prestigious awards ceremony took place on 24 November at Snowflake in Potchefstroom.

During the event, the NWU honoured the best-of-the-best academics across the three legs of the university’s core business: teaching and learning, research and innovation, and community engagement.

NWU alumnus has his eye on the world

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Mbulelo Mbiphi recently collaborated on an international campaign with the California-based eyewear brand Arnette.

Mbulelo completed a Bachelor of Administration in public administration at the Mafikeng Campus in 2021.

Arnette is an easy-going eyewear brand aimed at young people with an active, yet relaxed approach to life. Guided by the principle, “doing things your way is the only right way”, Arnette was founded in California in 1992.

AUTHeR – Unmasked Research-4-Health

In collaboration with the provincial Department of Health, the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Africa Unit for Transdisciplinary Health Research (AUTHeR) hosted the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Research Day at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU) on 2 November. This was the first such event held since 2017 and was a resounding success, with representatives from all four districts in North West and about 250 people in attendance.

NWU co-hosts inaugural annual Moses Kotane lecture

The North-West University (NWU), the North-West Provincial Government (NWPG) and the Moses Mauane Kotane Foundation co-hosted the inaugural annual Moses Kotane lecture on 18 November.

This year’s event with the theme: Resetting South Africa’s journey towards recovery and rebuilding, saw expert speakers, highly respected dignitaries* (including the premier of North West) and members of the community converge on the Potchefstroom Campus.

NWU Leopards Lair 2021 winner in 2022 EDHE finals

North-West University (NWU) 2021 Leopards Lair Undergraduate category winner Johann van Rooyen competed in the national finals of the 2022 Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) Entrepreneurship Intervarsity.

The competition took place on 17 November, followed by the EDHE Awards event on 18 November at the Premier Hotel OR Tambo.

Johann, a third-year student, is studying for two degrees simultaneously: a BCom in international trade and a BCom in forensic accounting.

He competed in EDHE finals in the category Existing Business: General.

WAITRO 2022: Africa Special Interest Group to help pave the way for African prosperity

On Wednesday, 16 November, the World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations (WAITRO) launched the WAITRO Africa Special Interest Group (SIG) during its biennial summit to herald a new era of global participation to address issues unique to the continent.

The summit was jointly hosted by the North-West University (NWU) and Stellenbosch University (SU) and took place at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. The NWU is WAITRO’s regional focal point for Africa.
