NWU continues its impressive climb among top global universities

The North-West University (NWU) has continued to improve its ranking and shines among the top global universities. This is evident in recent rankings by both the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) and the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings.

The latest Global 2000 list, which is published by the CWUR, places the NWU among the top 4,2% of the world’s best universities. This outstanding achievement was published on 13 May on the cwur.org website. The NWU was ranked according to academic performance among 20 966 universities worldwide.

University community mourns the passing of Justice Yvonne Mokgoro

The North-West University (NWU) has noted with sadness the passing of Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, former Constitutional Judge of South Africa, on Thursday, 9 May 2024.

Among her various qualifications, Justice Yvonne Mokgoro obtained her B Juris degree (1982) and Bachelor of Laws (1984) from the University of North West (now the North-West University).

Journey to NWU Medical School continues

Each step is more exciting than the previous one as the destination comes more clearly into view. On Wednesday, 8 May, a delegation from North-West University (NWU) met with general practitioners and specialists in the private sector in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District to provide an overview of the university’s journey to implement the NWU Medical School.

The event, held at the C’est La Belle venue in Klerksdorp, also aimed to brief the practitioners on the modules that the Medical School will offer and to extend an invitation to participate in these modules on a voluntary basis.

“Yster” Rassie Erasmus receives honorary doctorate

On Thursday 2 May, the North-West University (NWU) bestowed an honorary doctorate on Springbok coach and SA Rugby’s former director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus.

Rassie received his honorary doctorate on the NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus, and was joined by inspirational national captain, Siya Kolisi and the president of SA Rugby, Mark Alexander, amongst others. It was a day that will long be remembered.

Prof Bismark: NWU Young Guns, you are champions, again!

You did it again, boys. Today, I can barely contain my pride after your immense performance in the 2024 Varsity Young Guns final against Shimlas in Bloemfontein. Not only did you beat your opponents on their home turf 39-36, but you did so in spectacular fashion with a try at the death.

In doing so, you have ensured that the North-West University (NWU) is Young Guns champions for the second consecutive year. What an achievement!

NWU rakes in eight nominations for ‘Science Oscars’

The North-West University (NWU) has received eight nominations for this year’s prestigious NSTF-South32 Awards. It is another feather in the University’s cap in its pursuit of excellence without boundaries.

The NSTF-South 32 Awards, also known as the ‘Science Oscars’, is the largest, most comprehensive and one of the most coveted national awards.  It recognises outstanding contributions in science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation by individuals, teams and organisations.

Prof Bismark lauds Springboks as Newsmaker of the Year

The World Cup winning Springboks were named the 2023 Newsmaker of the Year by the National Press Club on Wednesday 17 April. The event is sponsored by the North-West University (NWU) and was held at the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens. Prof Bismark Tyobeka, principal and vice-chancellor of the NWU, lauded the Springboks for their immense achievements and their contributions to nation building, whilst also highlighting the integral role the press plays in working democracy.

The North-West University (NWU) recently hosted the media launch for the World Intellectual Property Day (WIPD) celebrations in partnership with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTIC), the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO), the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA).

The North-West University (NWU) has once again demonstrated its commitment to producing top-tier chartered accountancy professionals, as was evidenced by the outstanding results of its students in the recent South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Namibia (ICAN) Initial Test of Competence (ITC) exams.
