The North-West University (NWU) has hosted thousands of prospective students, parents, guardians and educators at its annual Open Days across the three campuses. These events offer a rich opportunity to witness university life first-hand, gain an insight into the study programmes of the university and explore future careers.
The 2026 Open Days were held under the theme “Be Yourself Here” to give prospective students a chance to interact with academics, students and support services and to view the state-of-the-art facilities and the various programmes offered at the university. Open Days were held on the Potchefstroom Campus on 9 May, the Vanderbijlpark Campus on 16 May, and the Mahikeng Campus on 23 May 2026.
Visitors to each of the three campuses were given a glimpse of the lively atmosphere of student life at the NWU. Faculty exhibitions, presentation on programmes, campus tours and shows on student life provided learners with an inside look into what life is like at the NWU. The Open Days demonstrated the vision of the university to excel in academics, innovation, student life and a holistic approach to studies.
The principal and vice-chancellor of the NWU, Prof. Bismark Tyobeka, encouraged students to see higher education as a chance to further their personal development and make a societal contribution while addressing prospective students at the Potchefstroom Campus Open Day. He noted that choosing a university was one of the most important decisions that a young person can ever make. “The NWU remains a university of choice for students from South Africa and abroad,” he noted. He mentioned the overwhelming demand for spaces for the 2026 academic year. “We received more than 428 000 applications during the cycle for the 2026 academic year,” said Prof. Tyobeka.
The Open Days showcased the various opportunities that the NWU has to offer to students studying at undergraduate and postgraduate level, support services for students, residences, sport, culture and leadership development programmes. Students and parents were able to find out more about courses and career opportunities from faculty representatives and receive answers to their questions.
A vibrant and energetic mood was palpable across all campuses, with many learners imagining themselves as students at the NWU. Science laboratories and engineering workshops, creative arts studios and student residences were among the facilities that were open to visitors on the day as the university revealed exactly how it is preparing its graduates for a world that continues to evolve and is becoming increasingly more complex.
The Open Days have also reflected the drive of the university to provide a supportive and all-inclusive learning environment for its students, where they can realise their full potential. The NWU continues to strive towards making an impact in South Africa by producing successful graduates.
To many prospective students and their families, the 2026 Open Days were more than just an introduction to university life, they were an initiation into a journey of hope, exploration and metamorphosis, an initiation into becoming part of a university community that is determined to make a positive difference.
