Mini-Cricket festival showcases young talent

The North-West University's (NWU’s) Sports Business Management Department recently hosted a Mini-Cricket festival as part of a community engagement initiative, aiming to promote youth participation in sports, particularly cricket, among primary school students in the Vaal Triangle region.

The event took place at the NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus and was a resounding success, drawing in participants and spectators from all over the region. It provided a wonderful opportunity for young athletes to showcase their talents and engage in friendly competition.

Congratulations to the newly inaugurated Vanderbijlpark’s Student Campus Council

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently inaugurated its Student Campus Council (SCC) members for the 2024/25 term.

During this significant event, the new SCC members were officially welcomed into office in the presence of their constituencies. During the ceremony, members took an oath, pledging their commitment to addressing the issues faced by students and ensuring their voices are heard.

Another successful BMI Day for the Vanderbijlpark Campus

The North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus hosted BMI Day, an annual event organised by the Centre for Business Mathematics and Informatics (CBMI) on 14 August 2024.

Since its inception in 2022, BMI Day has grown into a tradition, bringing together current students and accomplished alumni, and – for the first time this year – high-achieving Grade 11 and 12 learners from nearby schools.

Alumni honoured as Emerging Psychologist of the Year

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Marelie Botha was recently honoured as the Emerging Psychologist of the Year at the Society for Industrial and Organisational Psychology of South Africa (SIOPSA) Presidential Merit Awards held at the Wanderers Club, Johannesburg.

SIOPSA is a member-based, non-profit organisation established to enhance the industrial and organisational psychology profession in South Africa. These awards are held annually in recognition and celebration of excellence in industrial and organisational psychology.

Campus community steps into slippers to support seriously ill children

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Student Counselling and Development (SCD) division on the Vanderbijlpark Campus rallied up staff and students to support Slipper Day on 31 May.

Slipper Day is an annual fundraising event organised by Reach For A Dream that sees everyone from school children to corporate teams wear their slippers and Slipper Day stickers – all in support of seriously ill children who are in desperate need of hope and encouragement.

Celebrating 835 years of dedication

In a heart-warming celebration of commitment and dedication, the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently honoured its staff members for their long-standing service to the institution.

The university recognised employees who have reached milestones of 10, 15, 20, 25 and an astonishing 30 years of service. Together, these recipients commemorated a remarkable combined tenure of 835 years, symbolising not just loyalty, but a profound dedication to the university's mission and values.

Chief electoral commissioner encourages voter participation

The Faculty of Law at the North-West University (NWU) recently collaborated with the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to organise a guest lecture at the Vanderbijlpark Campus in celebration of World Day of Social Justice.

The lecture, titled "Elections, democracy, and citizen participation," was delivered by Sy Mamabolo, the chief electoral commissioner of the IEC. The event also coincided with the proclamation of the general election date – 29 May 2024. This general election will mark 30 years of freedom and democracy in South Africa.

Thought-provoking inaugural lecture provides insight into innovative teaching

Prof Verona Leendertz, deputy dean for research and innovation in the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, recently presented her inaugural lecture on the Vanderbijlpark Campus.

Tilted “Igniting innovative teaching: Connecting multifaceted dimensions for immersive learning”, the lecture provided insight into the complexity of learning and the multiple aspects which influence the future of education and how technology can be used to enhance learning.
