Vanderbijlpark Campus’s landscaping wins an award

Rothe Plantscapers’ landscaping on the North-West University’s (NWU's) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently scored the garden maintenance company a silver award at the South African Landscape Institute’s (SALI’s) Awards of Excellence ceremony.

As a principal member of the institute, Rothe Plantscapers submitted the Vanderbijlpark Campus as an entry, and their outstanding landscaping work earned them the award for their exemplary performance within the 75% to 84% range.

Hang a Hug for Mandela

The North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus has successfully concluded its "Hang a Hug" initiative in honour of Mandela Day.

During the campaign, students and staff donated jackets and hung them on designated trees around the campus for those in need during the cold winter months. The initiative managed to collect more than 150 jackets.

Programme will boost female leadership in higher education

The North-West University's (NWU’s) People and Culture division will be launching a Women in Leadership Programme on 25 August 2023 at the Riverside Sun Hotel in Vanderbijlpark.

This programme is part of the NWU’s strategic initiatives led by the principal and vice-chancellor, Prof Bismark Tyobeka, and aligns with the university’s multigenerational strategy.

NWU's Vanderbijlpark Campus celebrates new state-of-the-art Tsebonokeng Hall

The newly built Tsebonokeng Hall on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark was officially opened on 29 May 2023.

Located on the site of the old Building 24, which used to be the administration building, construction of the hall started in July 2022 and was completed in March 2023.

Inaugural conference calls for the re-intellectualising of African languages

It is difficult for researchers to find funding for research in African languages and more work needs to be done to promote African languages as languages of research, teaching and learning.

This was mentioned at the inaugural Batho Abantu African Languages Association (BAALA) conference that was hosted by the North-West University’s (NWU’s) School of Languages, the NWU Language Directorate and SEFALA.

The conference brought together local and international researchers in African languages and took place at the Riverside Sun Hotel in Vanderbijlpark.

Former Johannesburg mayor calls out service delivery at business breakfast

Service delivery issues came under the spotlight when the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently hosted the annual Alumni and Friends Business Breakfast in partnership with the NWU’s bhive Business Enterprise Development Centre (EDC).

This year’s event was themed “Stabilising South Africa through fast-tracking service delivery”, and featured a panel discussion led by internal and external experts who spoke about service delivery issues.

Vanderbiljlpark Campus community welcomes Dr McCallaghan’s appointment

Dr Sean McCallaghan, recently appointed director for student life on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, says his vision for Student Life is to continue creating a differentiating and inclusive environment for students.

Dr McCallaghan, who holds a PhD in business administration and management from the NWU, will assume his role on 1 March 2023, succeeding the late Jacob Simango who passed away in June last year.

Admired for his readiness to mentor and support students, his appointment has been widely welcomed by the university community.

NWU sign MoU to boost technological development in Vaal economic zone

On Friday, 20 February 2023, the North-West University (NWU) and the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate with the Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

This is to ensure that Gauteng investors and industry players in high technology sectors are supported in the development of new technologies, applied research and innovation and technical skills sets.

Nico’s sailing team cruises its way to national championships

North-West University (NWU) senior IT technician Nico Kroucamp is brimming with pride as his sailing team, Albatross, won three regattas in the last three months.

The three regattas the four-member team won, were the SA Sailing 75th Anniversary Regatta, the King of the Vaal Regatta and the L26 Class 2023 Free State provincials. The team is now awaiting an invitation to compete for national honours in KwaZulu-Natal.
