By Loveness Hulwane

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus recently inaugurated its Student Campus Council (SCC) members for the 2024/25 term.

During this significant event, the new SCC members were officially welcomed into office in the presence of their constituencies. During the ceremony, members took an oath, pledging their commitment to addressing the issues faced by students and ensuring their voices are heard.

Chris Williams, the director for student life, extended a warm welcome to the student structures, leaders and societies attending the inauguration. He emphasised the role of Student Life in supporting the SCC. “Student Life’s doors are open to guide and support the leaders in office, so we can work together to create a better campus experience.”

The SCC also expressed their dedication to enhancing both the academic and social experiences of students by saying, “Driven by a passion for creating a supportive campus community, we aim to promote leadership development and contribute to the university’s overall success.”

The SCC members, who will serve for 10 months, plan to employ various strategies, including advocacy, engagement and collaboration, to be a strong and effective voice for the student body.

Chris further assured them that the necessary tools and resources will be provided to help them advocate for student interests. Following his remarks, the SCC chairperson, Kamohelo Zwane, took his official oath. The inauguration then featured a musical performance by the campus choir Voices of the River, before Kamohelo delivered his first speech as chairperson.

Kamohelo stressed the importance of unity in overcoming challenges and championing student interests. He called on students to be active participants in matters that affect them, highlighting that their support is crucial for the success of the SCC. “As the SCC chairperson, I am confident in our ability to advocate for the students’ interests effectively. We will review policies to ensure that they are just and fair.”

Kamohelo also emphasised the need for academic excellence, pointing out that leaders must strike a balance between their responsibilities in office and their academic performance. “Excelling academically strengthens our ability to serve and advocate for our fellow students.”

Bongani Qosomba, senior administrative assistant at Student Life, expressed gratitude to everyone in attendance, and acknowledged the critical role students play in supporting their leaders. “The success of every initiative led by the SCC is dependent on student involvement. Congratulations to the newly inaugurated council.”

Chris wished the SCC well, reaffirming his office’s commitment to supporting the council’s efforts. “Lead with ethics and pride and take both the SCC office and Vanderbijlpark Campus forward.”
