Remember the name Betty Mahlatsi. This 28-year old alumna of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark has her sights set on success and if her professional run so far is anything to go by, she is on track for greatness.

Your brain thrives on curiosity. Research on inquisitive learning reveals that utilising board games within an educational setting promotes the process of brain development. The reason for this is simple: curiosity makes learning more effective and enjoyable because the players have to continually seek out answers to questions.

Nikiwe Mgwigwi, an alumna of the North-West University (NWU), is passionate about the development of young minds and recently received a national award for the life-changing impact she makes in the lives of school learners in Gauteng.

More than 55 years after the Sharpeville massacre, the township is still bleeding, and the youth are suffering the consequences. This is according to Prof Danie Meyer, associate professor in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the North-West University’s (NWU's) campus in Vanderbijlpark. 

The 1990s concept of “giving psychology away” has come to life at Optentia in 2017 where research is being done with the purpose of “giving science away”. For the Optentia research focus area, the community is the starting point for any research project.  “At Optentia, we do research together with the community,” says its director, Prof Ian Rothmann.  

Sebastian Kot regards South Africa as not only one of the most beautiful countries he has visited thus far, but also as a valued destination for collaborative research.

“If you have to put someone on a pedestal, put teachers. They are society’s heroes.” With these words by American author Guy Kawasaki in mind, the Alumni Office of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark hosted its first get-together for educators earlier in the year.

His plan of action? To actively take part in impactful discussions, to make the most of every opportunity that comes his way, to be involved in his community, and above all, to never stop acquiring new knowledge.

Prof Mary Grosser took the difference between advanced performance and academic achievement as the point of departure during her very first lecture as extraordinary professor in the Optentia research focus area on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) campus in Vanderbijlpark.
