A familiar voice, Mogomotsi "Peculiar" Ntehalang, a final-year communication student on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, walked off with the coveted Radio Presenter of the Year Award at the 2024 North West Media Awards in December.

Peculiar has been hosting the NWUFM Maftown Drive show on weekdays from 15:00 to 18:00 since from 2022. The programme features segments such as Ispan Iplan, which provides job insights, and Flash of Thought, which focuses on controversial discussions and factual information for listeners.

Dr Moleboheng Ramulumo, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Research Unit Self-Directed Learning has been invited by the Disability Cluster of the South African Youth Forum (SAYOF) to represent South Africa at RightsCon 2025, taking place in Taipei, Taiwan, from 23 to 29 February 2025.

When Eugenia March entered the Information Technology (IT) department as telephone coordinator and later as administration secretary at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus 42 years ago, it was a very different environment she recently retired from.

Researchers from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Unit of Environmental Sciences and Management conducted a study on the presence of a widely used herbicide – glyphosate – and its byproduct, AMPA, in South Africa’s water, soil and sediment.

Glyphosate, a key ingredient in many weed-control products, is essential in modern agriculture, particularly in the production of crops like maize and soybeans.

The North-West University (NWU) Mahikeng ladies football team is starting 2025 in top form and will be competing in the Varsity Football Tournament for the first time.

Their qualification follows a strong performance at the 2024 University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament where they finished third out of 19 teams and earned a bronze medal.

Success awaits those who are bold enough to seek challenges and embrace opportunities. There was no shortage of such people when the North-West University (NWU) launched its 2024 MBA Summer Study School at the Khaya Ibhubesi conference centre in Parys on 27 January.

The Summer Study School will conclude on Friday, 31 January and brings together MBA students for a week filled with information sessions, guest speakers, networking sessions and so much more.

As the world observes the campaign for 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) from 25 November to 10 December, the North-West University (NWU) is taking a proactive stance in addressing this critical issue.

Dr Khido Ramadie, a wellness counsellor at the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus, emphasises the importance of educational institutions in preventing and addressing GBV while supporting survivors.

Ntokozo Happy Msiza, a PhD student in animal sciences at the North-West University (NWU), recently returned from the TechWomen programme in the United States, where she represented South Africa among women leaders in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

TechWomen, an initiative by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, empowers women from Africa, the Middle East and Central and South Asia to advance their careers, pursue their dreams and inspire others in their communities.

The Occupational Hygiene and Health Research Initiative (OHHRI) at the North-West University (NWU) has once again showcased the outstanding calibre of its postgraduate students at the Southern African Institute for Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) Annual Conference 2024. This prestigious event, which was recently held in Gaborone, Botswana, gathers top talent and professionals in occupational hygiene and rewarded three NWU students for their excellence in research, publications and presentations: Monica Young, Marelizé van Ree, and Nadia Botha.

Self-directed learning can make the process of learning more enjoyable and allow students to personalise the learning experience, which is empowering and motivating.

Prof Elsa Mentz, director of the Research Unit Self-Directed Learning from the North-West University (NWU), is a true advocate for self-directed learning in higher and school education.
