The North-West University (NWU) honoured its exceptional staff at the annual NWU Excellence Awards ceremony, held in Potchefstroom on 20 November.

More than 150 staff members received recognition for their outstanding contributions to the university’s key focus areas of teaching and learning, community engagement, and research and innovation.

For more than two decades, the African Nutrition Leadership Programme (ANLP) of the North-West University (NWU) has been shaping the future of nutrition leadership on the continent. Since its first programme in 2002, this flagship 10-day residential initiative, hosted annually at the NWU, has developed over 500 professionals from more than 40 African countries. This year alone this flagship programme will reach close to 50 professionals from 10 African countries.

The atmosphere was charged with purpose and pride at the solemn declaration of second-year social work students on the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus. 

Held at the Tsebonokeng Hall in October, the solemn declaration holds profound meaning. It is a professional and ethical pledge taken by social work students as they transition from learners to practitioners. 

• STEM education needs to be put in the spotlight for South Africa to revive its ailing education sector. 
• The education system is not producing underachievers; it is manufacturing exclusion. 
• Teaching must be restored to its former prestige, which is a respected, aspirational career rather than a reluctant fallback. 
• The state must confront its own complacency.

Final-year Business Management students at the North-West University (NWU) were recently treated to an engaging guest lecture by one of the institution’s senior leaders, Ntsikie Kote-Nkomo, executive director for strategy and strategic projects in the vice-chancellor’s office.

Ntsikie brings more than two decades of strategic leadership to her role. She oversees institutional strategy development, performance alignment and strategic projects across NWU.

In a joint effort to strengthen digital capability, the office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Teaching and Learning, AI Hub, Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL), and the People and Culture division launched an innovative incentive programme to encourage North-West University (NWU) academic staff to complete an AI and Assessment course.

Staff members, students and stakeholders of the North-West University (NWU) gathered on the Potchefstroom Campus on 2 October to celebrate the launch of the second edition of the book Community Psychology: Global Crisis, Local Realities, and Action Global Crises.  

With youth unemployment continuing to challenge South Africa’s future, the North-West University (NWU) is showing that entrepreneurship is key to turning the tide. Through its bhive Enterprise Development Centre (EDC), the NWU hosted Student Entrepreneurship Week (SEW) 2025 from 29 September to 3 October across all three campuses.

Under the theme “Dream it. Build it. Live it.”, the week reminded students that they have the power to be job creators, not just job seekers.
