Congratulations, Comrades champs Tete and Adele!

They did it again! Tete Dijana and Adele Broodryk are on top of the ultramarathon world after both athletes delivered superlative Comrades 2023 performances.

Dijana won the men’s division in a record time of 5:14.01, which is the second consecutive win for the employee of Mi7, an external security service provider to the NWU, who can be found on the Mahikeng Campus when on duty.

NWU career empowerment seminar unlocks opportunities

The North-West University’s (NWU) Alumni Relations office and the Career Centre recently hosted a career empowerment seminar for postgraduate students.

The aim of the seminar was to equip them with the necessary skills, and to provide them with the insight and resources they need to navigate the professional world and to make informed career decisions.

Various companies made presentations at the event, including the Small Enterprises Development Agency, the National Youth Development Agency, and the Department of Labour.

NWU appoints alumnus and consul-general as professor of practice

Dr Bobby Moroe, North-West University (NWU) alumnus and the consul-general of South Africa in Lagos, Nigeria, has been appointed as a professor of practice in the research focus area Afrocentric Governance of Public Affairs (AGoPA) from 1 June 2023 to 31 May 2026.

In his new role, Dr Moroe will play an active part in training both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the specialised field of AGoPA.

Three NWU alumni’s boxing academy aims to uplift the community

Three female alumni of the North-West University (NWU) and former university team boxers – Onalenna Tsae, Goitseone Kgopiso, and Keamogetse Lesole – opened the SK Boxing Academy in 2022 to develop and promote the sport in their community.

The academy, strictly owned and run by women, currently has two branches – one in Uitkyk Village and the other in Mmabatho.

Celebrity journalist and NWU alumnus traces his ancestors’ steps

Celebrity journalist and alumnus of the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, Lesley Mofokeng, recently launched a book, The Man Who Shook Mountains: In the Footsteps of My Ancestors.

Written over three years and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers, the book explores the life of his grandfather, Mongangane Wilfred Mofokeng, a prominent Dutch Reformed Church evangelist. His grandfather built a community in the Gelukspan area in Ditsobotla, North-West after black landowners were evicted in the 1950s from the cities to live in reserves and homelands.

Accountability and training are the keys to better financial management in municipalities

Local municipalities in North West have not achieved clean audit reports due to the mismanagement of financial resources. This is according to a research study conducted by Dr Auchalie Mothupi in his PhD studies at the North-West University (NWU).

The title of Dr Mothupi’s thesis was “Developing an accountability framework to enhance management of local municipal finance in the North West Province”.

NWU alumnus aims to bring Mrs South Africa title home

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Berlina Lekgethwane could very well be the next Mrs South Africa.

She has recently entered the 2023 competition and has advanced to the semi-finals.

Berlina, who was born and bred in Ramokokastad in the Phadi village, graduated from the NWU's Mahikeng Campus with a BA in communications and an honours degree in social sciences psychology. She also holds a master's degree in business administration from Mancosa and is currently pursuing another master's degree in public administration from the same institution.

NWU alumnus recognised for his role in sport

The Department of Arts, Culture, Sports, and Recreation, in collaboration with the North West Sports Confederation, recently honoured North-West University (NWU) alumnus Keorapetse Mashimo for his contribution to sport.

He was announced the Sports Volunteer of the Year as well as Sports Administrator of the Year during the North West Sports awards that took place on 24 February at Sun City.

Keorapetse was recognised for his hard work and dedication in the field of boxing in particular.
