NWU alumnus is first female municipal manager

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Advocate Dineo Mongwaketse has recently been appointed as the first-ever female manager for the Mahikeng local municipality, and assumed office on 1 August.

Advocate Mongwaketse recently graduated with an LLM degree from the NWU. She also holds an LLB and MBA degree from the NWU, as well as a BTech in internal auditing and a national diploma in internal auditing from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. After completing her LLB degree, she served pupillage at the North West Bar Association.

NWU alumnus is a top 10 Education Changemaker

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Tebogo Edwin Lesoro has been selected as one of the winners of the Education Changemakers programme.

This programme, now running for its second year, was initiated by the Trevor Noah Foundation, in partnership with the Young African Leaders Initiative Regional Leadership Centre Southern Africa (YALI RCLSA) and the University of South Africa.

Tebogo came in sixth in the top 10 best presentations from participants in the Southern African Developing Countries (SADC) region.

The centre was established in 2009 to support and offer capacity development opportunities for students and alumni.

NWU alumnus nominated for most influential young person in North West Province

Tebogo Phakedi, a North-West University (NWU) alumnus has been nominated as one of the 50 most influential young people in the North West province.

Tebogo, a journalist at the SABC, was nominated after local newspaper Naledi News requested its readers and the general public to nominate young people who they believe are goal driven and influential.

NWU to host launch of renaming of bursary scheme

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus, in conjunction with the North West Premier’s office, will be hosting the official launch of the renaming of the Provincial Bursary Scheme to the Victor Thebe Sifora bursary scheme on 1 June 2022.

The renaming of the scheme is aimed at promoting and preserving the legacy of VT Sifora as an academic, activist and struggle veteran.

The bursary scheme will provide financial support to prospective students from poor backgrounds to grant them access to various institutions of higher learning.

NWU alumnus and Miss SA contestant visits her alma mater

North-West University (NWU) alumnus and Miss South Africa contestant Mphontle Plaatjie recently paid the Vanderbijlpark Campus a courtesy visit as part of her Miss SA tour, leading up to the selection of the top 10 finalists.  

The former NWU law student and Arts and Culture committee member is among the Miss South Africa top 30 vying for the title of Miss South Africa 2022. During the next competition stage the public will be the fifth judge in selecting the top 10 finalists.

NWU mascot Eagi graduates

A secret, closely guarded since 2019, was at long-last revealed during the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Science graduation session on 23 May 2022.

Not only did NWU mascot Eagi graduated with a BSc degree in agriculture and agricultural economics, but his true identity was revealed.

Kabelo Mathope, wearing the iconic grey, blue and purple mascot sneakers, got a standing ovation from the crowd as he was announced as Eagi, the iconic mascot.

NWU now ranks in top 4,5% of global universities

The North-West University (NWU) continues to shine in global rankings. In the latest rankings, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) placed the NWU in the top 4,5% of universities in their 2022/2023 edition of the Global 2000 list. This is an improvement from being in the top 4,7% in last year’s ranking.

This outstanding achievement was published on 25 April on the cwur.org website. The NWU was ranked according to academic performance among 19 788 universities worldwide.

NWU’s Vanderbijlpark Campus to host business breakfast

The North-West University’s (NWU’s) Alumni Relations office, in partnership with the bhive Business Enterprise Development Centre (EDC), will host the annual NWU Alumni & Friends Business Breakfast on 25 March 2022.

The event brings together various stakeholders, including alumni, staff, students, community members, local businesses, and various government departments, offering them the opportunity to join in robust discussions and to network with business members across the Vaal Triangle region.
