What began as a digital footprint in South Africa has grown into a continental voice, one strong enough to earn North-West University (NWU) alumnus John Nchoe an honorary award at the prestigious Icons of Africa Awards.
Nchoe, a social media entrepreneur who holds a BA and BA Honours in Communication from the NWU, was recognised for his growing influence in digital strategy, content creation and thought leadership across Africa’s media and tourism sectors.
The recognition, presented at the awards on 6 December 2025, is the latest in a series of career milestones that have positioned Nchoe as a trusted voice in Africa’s digital communication landscape. One of these was his selection to speak on the Africa’s Travel Indaba Thought Leadership Panel in May 2024, where he joined experts from 26 African countries to discuss the importance of social media in destination marketing and cultural exchange.
“That platform affirmed that the work we are doing is essential for Africa’s economic and cultural future,” he said.
Another defining moment was his participation in South Africa’s first Glamping Summit in June 2024, where he provided insights into the role of collaboration and strategic storytelling in the tourism industry.
“It showed that my influence extends beyond aesthetics. My role is to provide practical strategies that support economic and cultural development,” he noted.
Then, in April this year, Nchoe was nominated as one of the top 100 Influential Men of the Year in South Africa, presented by BIGM Production & Elite Investment to recognise leaders in storytelling and trendsetting influence.
He inspires audiences, elevates brands, and shapes the digital landscape with creativity and authenticity. “It proved that my voice is resonating beyond the digital space and into the broader professional landscape,” he said.
Significance of his Icons award
The Icons of Africa Awards, presented in collaboration with the SheReignsAfrica Network, celebrate leaders, creators, and innovators who strengthen Africa’s social, cultural, and economic footprint. This year’s edition honoured individuals who demonstrate excellence, resilience and visionary leadership.
For Nchoe, the award signals both achievement and direction.
“I am truly humbled and honoured to receive this award,” he said. “I give all glory to God for His grace, His guidance and the strength He continues to give me every step of the way.”
Nchoe said the award validates his shift from content creation to strategic thought leadership. “It is a reminder that the work is bigger than me and I am committed to serving with purpose. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. This one is for all of us,” he concluded.
