Alumnus appointed division head at UK law firm

North-West University (NWU) alumnus Thato Mashishi has been appointed head of the corporate and commercial division at Berwins Solicitors Limited in the United Kingdom (UK), marking a significant career milestone.

Thato joined Berwins in November 2025 and took over leadership of the firm’s business arm from founder Paul Berwin as the firm positions itself for expansion.

“My role includes growing my team and the unit. I oversee business development and the introduction of efficiencies, including incorporating technology in the way we work,” explained Thato.

NWU alumnus honoured at Icons of Africa Awards

What began as a digital footprint in South Africa has grown into a continental voice, one strong enough to earn North-West University (NWU) alumnus John Nchoe an honorary award at the prestigious Icons of Africa Awards.

Nchoe, a social media entrepreneur who holds a BA and BA Honours in Communication from the NWU, was recognised for his growing influence in digital strategy, content creation and thought leadership across Africa’s media and tourism sectors.

The North-West University (NWU) honoured ten remarkable professionals at its prestigious biennial Alumni Excellence Awards ceremony held in Pretoria on 30 October.

This year’s distinguished honourees include veteran South African actor Hans Strydom, World Cup cricket star Tazmin Brits, and health economist Prof James Avoka Asamani, among others.

Through the Alumni Excellence Awards, the NWU recognises exceptional alumni whose work is making a lasting impact in their respective fields and in society.

Graduate builds international partnerships in higher education

Thanks to the interest and mentorship of her lecturers, North-West University (NWU) alumnus Seipelo Kgosiejang is playing a key role today in advancing South Africa’s higher education agenda on the continent and globally.

In her current role in international relations at the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Seipelo is responsible for developing partnerships with African and Middle Eastern countries and coordinating South Africa’s participation in major international platforms.

A journey to sustainable fragrance entrepreneurship

Karabo Molebatsi transformed her love for fragrance into a business that blends psychology, wellness and sustainability. From her years at the North-West University (NWU) to founding Scented by Karabo Pty Ltd, her journey shows how passion can evolve into a brand with purpose.

“I studied at the NWU from 2013 to 2015, where I was enrolled for a BA degree in industrial psychology and labour relations. I graduated and received my degree in 2016,” says Karabo.

Alumnus Tshegofatso Ramokopeloa – a trailblazer in law and African spirituality

This powerful Latin phrase is not just a motto for Tshegofatso Ramokopeloa, it is the guiding principle of her life and career.

Born and raised in the heart of Mabeskraal village, Tshegofatso proudly identifies herself as ngwanyana wa Motlhako, the only daughter in a family of six siblings. Today, she is the proud mother of two beautiful daughters, an accomplished attorney and a revered traditional healer.
