Faculty of Law alumni reunion focuses on ethics, AI and legal excellence

The North-West University (NWU) Faculty of Law reunion recently brought together distinguished alumni who are legal practitioners, academics and institutional leaders for an evening of engagement, reflection and knowledge-sharing. The event was held at the Seven Villa Hotel and Spa in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The reunion formed part of the ongoing efforts of the NWU to strengthen alumni relations and reinforce professional networks in the legal sphere, while also exploring contemporary issues shaping the legal profession.

Former SRC chairperson launches national foundation to empower dreams

Twenty-eight-year-old Kamohelo Zwane, a former chairperson of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Vanderbijlpark Campus of the North-West University (NWU), an honours degree holder and now an administrator on the Vanderbijlpark Campus, is on a mission to change lives.

With the launch of the Amukeleni Youth Development Organisation, Kamohelo aims to empower South Africans from all walks of life – whether formally educated or not – to pursue their dreams, reclaim lost opportunities and realise their full potential.

Academic and alumni recognised among Inside Education’s 100 Shining Stars

Recognition for academic and community impact has placed the North-West University (NWU) in focus after one of its academics and two alumni were named among Inside Education’s 100 South African Shining Stars.

Dr Benjamin Rapanyane, a senior lecturer in political science at the NWU, was selected for his contribution to education in disadvantaged communities and his academic work in African political studies.

Special moment for dean as daughter graduates in programme she championed

Twelve years ago, Prof. Liezl van Dyk, executive dean of the Faculty of Engineering, came to the North-West University (NWU) on a mission: to play a central role in developing industrial engineering as an impactful discipline at the university. Her daughter, Karla, was 10 years old at the time. Now, on 31 March this year, Prof. van Dyk experienced the fruits of her labour first-hand when Karla graduated as an industrial engineer.

Law graduate appointed North West Public Service Commissioner

Appointed the new Public Service Commissioner for the North West Province, North-West University (NWU) alumnus Advocate Neo Sephhoti is determined to strengthen accountability in the province.

Her appointment was confirmed during a sitting of the North West Provincial Legislature in March where the Speaker, Dr Desbo Mohono, introduced her following a recruitment process conducted by an ad-hoc committee to fill the position that had been vacant for several years.

Gofaone targets Setswana audiences through storytelling at Motsweding FM

Storytelling in indigenous languages plays a vital role in preserving cultural memory, shaping identity and strengthening community connection.

Wanting to contribute to this, Gofaone Motsamai, a North-West University (NWU) alumnus, has joined Motsweding FM as a drama producer, where he oversees the development and production of radio drama content for Setswana-speaking audiences.

From the quiet streets of the Bodibe village outside Lichtenburg to the helm of a secondary school in Rustenburg, North-West University (NWU) alumnus Itumeleng Joy Molaakgosi embodies resilience, academic excellence and servant leadership.

Itumeleng was born on 19 March 1987 and raised by parents who had no formal education, and his story is rooted in determination and faith in the transformative power of education.
