North-West University (NWU) alumnus Leonard Hamunyela has reached another significant career milestone following his appointment as Head of the Enterprise Banking segment at FNB Namibia Commercial.
Hamunyela, who holds an honours degree in Chartered Accountancy from the NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus, will be responsible for driving strategic growth initiatives and strengthening relationships with entrepreneurs. Through this work, he aims to help FNB Namibia Commercial continue delivering sustainable value to its clients, shareholders and communities.
Commenting on his appointment, Hamunyela described the achievement as one in gratitude rather than personal recognition.
“This appointment means gratitude more than anything else,” he stated. “Every milestone in my career has been built on people who have believed in me - family who sacrificed, mentors who challenged me, leaders who trusted me with opportunities before I felt ready, and teams who have taught me just as much as I hopefully taught them.”
He believes that leadership should be seen as an opportunity to serve others on a greater scale.
“It also serves as a reminder that leadership is not a destination; it is simply a larger platform from which to serve.”
Hamunyela has established a clear vision for the Enterprise Banking segment; to become the undisputed growth partner for ambitions businesses in Namibia, with success measured by the positive impact achieved by its clients.
“Success is measured by whether our clients are creating jobs, expanding across borders, or building businesses for their children to inherit. If we can assist our clients to succeed, our country succeeds. That is the kind of banking I want us to be known for,” he added.
Before assuming his new position, Hamunyela served as senior transactor in Investment Banking at RMB Namibia, a division within FNB Namibia commercial. During his term he made substantial contributions to the growth of the Investment Banking portfolio and successfully delivered financing solutions to clients across various sectors.
His academic and professional experience have further strengthened his leadership profile. He is a qualified chartered accountant in both South Africa and Namibia and holds an honours degree from the NWU, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Chartered Accountancy from the University of Namibia. He has also completed several specialist and executive leadership programmes that have reinforced his expertise within the banking sector.
