North-West University (NWU) Alumnus Siyabonga Mhlabane has been nominated for the FOYA Awards 2022 in the category of the Most Promising Founder of the Year under 30.
Launched in 2016, the annual FOYA Awards recognises and appreciates young founders contributing to the development of the African continent, while creating sustainable jobs through entrepreneurship and inspiring others to start their own businesses.
You will need both hands for this. Ten – count them – ten North-West University (NWU) Eagles from the NWU’s athletics club have been included in the South African team that will compete in the CAA Africa Championships that will be held in Mauritius from 8 to 12 June.
That is excluding long-distance runner Elroy Gelant, who is a staff member of the NWU, but not a member of the athletics club.
In all, 89 South African athletes will compete on the island in the Indian Ocean, the largest contingent from the Republic yet.
Fifteen months ago, the unfathomable happened. In an incident of such malice, such disrespect and cruelty, Carla Mӧller’s life was irrevocably changed.
She was raped, but due to the non-violent nature of the incident, she was dissuaded from laying a formal complaint. According to her, her case was not allowed to be heard by law enforcement, who refused to listen, and justice was not allowed to run its course.
At the tender age of 25, Phemelo Theophilus Magau has completed a daunting challenge: he finished his Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree in just two years.
He was awarded his LLD in mercantile law during an autumn graduation ceremony at the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus on 25 May 2022.
Phemelo’s PhD thesis was “A comparative legal analysis of the promotion of financial education for low-income earners in South Africa”.
Misinformation about cannabis use can have serious implications for people facing mental health challenges. Mental healthcare practitioners can counter this by running education campaigns for vulnerable people, including mental healthcare users and especially the youth.
This recommendation comes from Isaac Mokgaola, an academic in the School of Nursing Science, who recently conducted a study on mental healthcare practitioners’ perspectives on the legalisation of cannabis in South Africa.
His study was supervised by Prof Leepile Sehularo and Prof Emmerentia du Plessis.

On 20 April 2022 the university received an external award for the successful implementation of Planon, an integrated workplace management system (IWMS). The award was presented by the South African Facilities Management Association for the Technology Implementation of the Year 2022.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) says its stocks are unstable, and is urging the public to kindly donate blood regularly to avoid blood shortages.
Meanwhile, the North-West University (NWU) is contributing to the campaign by hosting additional blood donation drives. Three drives, in association with the SANBS, have already taken place on the NWU’s campuses this year, and more will be held this month to help replenish SANBS blood stocks.
Prof Doris Bohman, a registered nurse, nurse tutor and associate professor at the Department of Health, Blekinge Institute of Technology, in Sweden, was recently appointed as an extraordinary professor at the North-West University's (NWU’s) Optentia research unit.
Dr Bohman holds a PhD in medical science and has extensive experience working with ethnographic methods focusing on gerontological care.
