It cannot be disputed that 2022 was an eventful year for news outlets. The invasion of Ukraine; a global rise in inflation; the death of prominent figures, not only in the entertainment industry, but also major international personalities such as Queen Elizabeth II; and the intensified effects of climate change, among other things, dominated the headlines as the world’s population crossed the milestone of 8 billion people.
It is hard to recall a time when there were as many economic and political cross-currents as there are for South Africa as it enters 2023. This is according to Prof Raymond Parsons, economist at the Business School of the North-West University (NWU).

From 25 November to 10 December we as South Africans took hands with the rest of the world to take part in the United Nations’ 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign. The campaign, which is held annually, commenced on the International Day of No Violence Against Women and will end on International Human Rights Day.
The British Council in South Africa has selected two innovators of the North-West University (NWU) to participate in its inaugural Strengthening Commercialisation Skills (SCS) programme. This programme is directed towards the fields of humanities, arts and social sciences (HASS).
Dr Mesuli Mbanjwa, a commercialisation manager at the NWU’s Technology Transfer and Innovation Support (TTIS) office, and Prof Henk Louw, an associate professor of Academic Literacy in the Faculty of Education, have been chosen for the programme, which kicked off on 29 November 2022.
North-West University (NWU) alumnus Tlotlo Kokeletso Palai recently launched her own hot sauce brand
The name of Tlotlo’s hot sauce is Deddi’s hot sauce, a name dedicated to her father, who is a farmer.
She says her hot sauce is made using her father’s seeds from 10 years ago. “The chilli itself is unique and so is the hotness.”
Tlotlo, originally from Rustenburg and a Bachelor of Social Science graduate from the NWU, says she started her trials in 2021.
The North-West University’s (NWU’s) research niche area Visual Narratives and Creative Outputs (ViNCO) presented a group exhibition, CLOUD MATTERS, from 2 to 4 November 2022.
Stemming from the Faculty of Humanities’ international Digital Humanities in Precarious Times conference, the exhibition showcased the impact of cloud computing and servers on the environment.
The winners of the 2022 North-West University (NWU) School of Philosophy Essay competition were recently announced.
They are:
1. Mkhize Talent Faith - essay: The effects of technology on the environment: A case of environmental degradation.
2. Melisa Siziba - essay: How madness is socially constructed.
3. Aviwe Puluma - essay: The invention and artificial intelligence of technology and its impact on the environment.
The North-West University (NWU) Debating Union on the Mahikeng Campus was recently invited to take part in the SA FM University Debate Challenge against the University of Pretoria.
The invitation is the result of the union's exceptional performance, despite this being their first venture into participating in external competitions.
