Noord-Vaal Cross Country competition broadens its horizons

On Saturday 26 August, talented athletes from 40 secondary and six primary schools participated in the Noord-Vaal Cross Country competition hosted by the North-West University's (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus and Hoërskool DR Malan in Meyerton.

The event brought together talented athletes from Vanderbijlpark, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Meyerton and Potchefstroom.

Taking place along the picturesque banks of the Vaal River, participants immersed themselves in the stunning surroundings as they navigated the cross-country course.

Kgopotso Moshapo: NWU defender's heroics secure back-to-back goals

North-West University (NWU) Eagles defender Kgopotso Moshapo has emerged as the saviour of his team, delivering clutch performances in two consecutive games during this year's Varsity Football season.

With remarkable headers, he not only secured victory over the Central University of Technology (CUT), but also salvaged a crucial draw against the University of Free State.

Hard fought victory for NWU Eagles

Scoring in the 95th minute of the game through a header by Kgopotso Moshapo after a well-taken corner, the North-West University (NWU) Eagles secured victory against the Central University of Technology (CUT) in the fourth round of the Varsity Football tournament.

The NWU exhibited early dominance in this home game, particularly in the initial 25 minutes of the encounter against CUT. This pressure led to defensive lapses from CUT, creating opportunities for the Eagles to exploit.

Lucy Twani: Taking the lead on netball player development

Player development: it is imbedded in the core of netball at the North-West University (NWU), and if there is a more enthusiastic proponent of this than Lucy Twani, this person will be hard to find.

Lucy is the high-performance netball coach for the junior teams at the Potchefstroom Campus, and it is because of this 27-year-old’s dedication to unearthing and developing netball talent that the NWU is one of the netball hubs in the country.

NWU secures 3-0 victory in Varsity football showdown

Following a goalless draw in their first match against the University of Johannesburg during the opening round of Varsity Football, the North-West University (NWU) triumphed with a score of 3-0.

Entering the game with a single-minded focus to secure victory against VUT, their initial attempt at netting a goal materialised just five minutes into the first half – only to be thwarted by the vigilant VUT goalkeeper.

Jarred gears up for World Student Games

Badminton boffin Jarred Elliott, a 23-year-old second-year student in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the North-West University (NWU), will represent the NWU and South Africa at the upcoming International University Sports Federation (FISU) Summer World University Games in China.

Recognising the immense responsibility that comes with this honour, Jarred, alongside the other members of the South African contingent, is diligently preparing for the upcoming games.
