Twenty-nine medals from two karate tournaments are impressive by anybody’s standards. This is the medal haul that the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Mahikeng Campus Karate Eagles brought home from tournaments in Mamelodi and Rustenburg.
At the Siyakhumbula Memorial Tournament in Mamelodi on 11 April, the Karate Eagles competed in the full-contact division and had 10 podium finishes: one gold medal, three silver medals and six bronze medals.
Next, on the same day, the team competed in Rustenburg in the semi-contact division and secured 19 medals: eight gold, five silver and six bronze.
“The team continues to make us proud,” says Coach Itumeleng Mafueka. “Their discipline, commitment and work show in their results. They demonstrated character in both tournaments and are developing as competitors. If they maintain this level of focus and determination, they can compete at higher levels, including the University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament.”
The karateka presented a united front at both tournaments. Team members prepared, entered and exited the ring together and maintained support throughout the events.
The results from Mamelodi and Rustenburg mark progress for the NWU Karate Eagles, who are clearly on top of their game as they continue their competition season.

The NWU Mahikeng Karate Eagles won 29 medals at tournaments in Mamelodi and Rustenburg.
