The North-West University (NWU) Eagles may have been unable to secure a trophy in any of the recently completed Varsity Sports tournaments, but they sure have given a good account of themselves.
They came, they saw and they conquered! They also left our nerves in tatters. On Monday, 10 October, the North-West University (NWU) Eagles stunned defending champions, Kovsies, to advance to the 2022 Varsity Netball finals.
The Eagles had to muster all their willpower to secure a 64–61 win in Bloemfontein against the same opponents who had beaten them a week before. Coach Elsunet du Plessis would have been worried as the game progressed, with the Eagles only taking the lead for the first time with about ten minutes to go.
The saying goes - cherish the moment, live your dream and play netball. This is precisely what the NWU Eagles netball team is doing.
They are off to a strong start in the 2022 Varsity Netball campaign by winning all three of their games.
On Monday, 19 September, bragging rights went to the NWU Eagles yet again, when they defeated the Nelson Mandela University Madibaz by 84-50.
The NWU Eagles now occupy the first position on the overall log with 15 points.
North-West University (NWU) coach Karabo Masehela says they are ready to reclaim the Varsity Football cup from the University of Johannesburg when they meet in the semi-final at the UJ Stadium on 15 September 2022.
“UJ beat us in the fifth round-robin game of Varsity Football by two goals to one, and my boys are ready to go all out to take revenge for this loss.
“Once beaten, twice shy... we are going out there to reclaim what is ours,” says coach Karabo.
The North-West University (NWU) Eagles crushed the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) by 3-0 in the seventh and final round-robin Varsity Football game at the NWU’s Mahikeng Stadium on Thursday, 8 September 2022.
In the 21st minute of the game, the NWU Eagles opened the scoring thanks to Omphile Shuping who netted with a long-range left-foot shot.
VUT had a double chance to equalize just before the break, but the first attempt following a corner shot hit the post before NWU goalkeeper Luzuko Jevuka denied VUT on the rebound.
The North-West University (NWU) continues to show why this institution is a conveyer belt for South African athletics.
During this year’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, the NWU once again made sure that the South African team had a characteristic NWU flavour.
For the national netball team, goal shooter

On 3 September the North-West University (NWU) Soccer Institute will be conducting a competition for players under the age of 19 with the aim to discover new talent.
“The soccer institute has been fostering and producing top-tier talent for many years, and we have no intention of stopping now,” says Vuyo Sambo, manager of the institute.
Congratulations, congratulations and, once more, congratulations! History will always remember the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Dr Adele Broodryk, a senior lecturer at the School of Human Movement Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences, as being the first South African woman to complete the 2022 Comrades Marathon.
She also claimed the overall third position in the women's division with a time of 06:26:35. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that it was the mother of two’s first Comrades Marathon.
The North-West University (NWU) Eagles football players have had a hectic programme preparing for the 2022 Varsity Football tournament. To keep the players physically fit and mentally ready to maximally compete in this year’s tournament, the NWU counts on its physical trainer and fitness coach, Dino Rangaka.
Dino, who has been with the NWU’s Soccer Institute on the Mahikeng Campus for seven years, holds an introductory certificate on coaching from the Netherlands, and an advanced periodisation certificate from the World Football Coaching Academy.
Wesley Sneijder, Fabio Cannavaro, Carlos Tevez, Raul Gonzalez, and Mateo Kovacic are among some of the best football players and have one thing in common – before the dizzying heights of fame and fortune, they all started off as ball boys.
Omphile Shuping, one of the North-West University (NWU) Eagles team members taking part in the 2022 Varsity Sports Football tournament, also started as a ball boy for the NWU team during the inaugural Varsity Football tournament in 2013.
