The School of Accounting Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) has once again distinguished itself as an indisputable leader in its field with the recent announcement by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) that the school’s Bachelor of Commerce in Financial Accountancy has been accredited for the purposes of SAICA’s Associate General Accountant [AGA(SA)] designation.

At the North-West University (NWU), one of these words is “pharmacoepidemiology”, and it refers to a field that is enriching the health of the population of southern Africa.

Report to “court” for the NWU-Juta Mock Trials

It is again time for students to don their judicial robes for the popular annual NWU-Juta Mock Trials competition.

This year’s competition promises to be especially exciting, with the semi-finals and final taking place on 6 and 7 August respectively in the North West High Court in Mahikeng. The opening function will be hosted on 4 August.

“This will also be the first year that all four our semi-finals will take place simultaneously, bringing all the action to the courtrooms at the same time,” says Adv René Koraan, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law.

NWU psychologist to accompany SA team to World Games

Prof Ankebé Kruger from the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Faculty of Health Sciences has been appointed as psychologist for the South African student team taking part in the World Student Games in Chengdu, China from 28 July to 8 August 2023.

The event marks the 32nd edition of the Summer World University Games, with approximately 8 000 athletes from more than 150 countries expected to compete in 18 different sport codes.

Empowering female leaders to strive for excellence

In anticipation of Women's Month, the North-West University’s (NWU’s) Vanderbijlpark Campus, in collaboration with ArcelorMittal South Africa Limited, recently hosted a breakfast event themed "Women of Steel".
Hosted by Prof Linda du Plessis, vice-principal and deputy vice-chancellor for planning and Vanderbijlpark Campus operations, the event focused on empowering women at ArcelorMittal South Africa and to provide them with the opportunity to network with other women in leadership positions.

Jenique’s generosity brings joy to her feline friends

Jenique Botha, a compassionate and dedicated 20-year-old student from the North-West University (NWU), recently made a heart-warming gesture by donating cat food at the Cat Shack and Edenvale Ferals.

Known for its exceptional boarding services for cats when their owners are away, the Cat Shack goes above and beyond by actively participating in cat and kitten rescue and rehoming within the community.

Preparing students for the Fourth Industrial Revolution

The School of Accounting Sciences at the North-West University (NWU) is going to empower newly qualified and existing accountants to keep up with the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

This event will be hosted at the Tsebonokeng Hall on the Vanderbijlpark Campus on 4 August from 11:00 to 16:00.

The project, led by Kurt Naicker, a senior lecturer and chartered accountant at the School of Accounting Sciences, aims to identify the necessary skills and knowledge required for newly qualified and existing chartered accountants to integrate the 4IR into their environment.

SADiLaR-UJ externship highlights career possibilities in digital humanities

A group of linguistics and language practice students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) recently attended an online workshop with staff from the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR) to learn more about the career possibilities in the field of digital humanities.

This one-day externship – an online internship – took place on 14 June 2023 via Zoom, and offered the students a different perspective on the types of careers they could follow once qualified.

Programme will boost female leadership in higher education

The North-West University's (NWU’s) People and Culture division will be launching a Women in Leadership Programme on 25 August 2023 at the Riverside Sun Hotel in Vanderbijlpark.

This programme is part of the NWU’s strategic initiatives led by the principal and vice-chancellor, Prof Bismark Tyobeka, and aligns with the university’s multigenerational strategy.
